or did they?

The Kremlin says secret plans for a Russian long-range nuclear torpedo - called "Status-6" - should not have appeared on Russian TV news.

However, the Russian government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta reported details of the weapon, without showing the diagram, and speculated about a super-radioactive cobalt device. So the leak may not have been accidental.

An interesting concept and considering how the Russians have apparently been sneaking around in their subs of late maybe they were gathering intel on places they could blow up with that thing.

Presumably this just gets around Americas of sailing in fleets, what's the point of having 50 small boats protecting your aircraft carrier if a sub can take out every ship in a 5 mile radius?

It’s a nuclear torpedo. Like the British had for years. This isn’t new, just an update of a current weapon.

It also gets round any anti-ballistic missile technology that your enemies may choose to deploy.

I heard it was a conspiracy by the UK government, they actually leaked the plans to the news channel so that they could ensure Tridents replacement goes ahead...makes you think eh...

A mate of mine used to be an engineer on UK subs. He said the amount of sneaking around by subs on all sides was really quite widespread!

To be fair, in you're in a sub, and you're not sneaking around, you're not doing it right, and you might as well be in a boat.

They intended to leak this, it's of limited use.

well, if we're being picky about these things...It's a drawing of a nuclear torpedo...

I could draw a space ship with death sharks and frikking lazers...doesn't mean etc etc

Unless you are doing the old "hiding in plain sight" approach. This one's made it past the Australian Navy and is now in striking range of Sydney

Using nukes underwater is nothing new.

In fact, 1 of the tests performed at Bikini was underwater.

The torpedo is just a delivery system.

Forgive my writing style I don't mean to appear rude, but I've often wondered - I do have a theory - why you write your name at the bottom of all your posts. Why is that?

If the drawings are to scale, they are gonna need a bigger submarine, no way that's gonna fit in those wee tiny subs.

Just to be a bore ....

and you might as well be in a boat.

Isn't a Sub actually called/classified as boat in the Navy .... ?

I was vaguely under the impression that nuclear torpedoes have been a thing for some time. I had however assumed that they were for naval warfare - destroying ships, or other submarines. This thing seems to be more of a strategic rather than tactical weapon.

The article suggests that its intended use is to destroy large coastal targets and irradiate large amounts of land. Is using a torpedo for that sort of warfare a new thing or is that what existing nuclear torpedoes were designed for?

It's not a nuclear torpedo in the usual sense though, it's a torpedo specifically designed to **** up as much shit as possible for as long as possible. Salt the land if you will.

It's the long term equivalent of a neutron bomb in that rather than being designed to create material damage it produces Cobalt-60 which is highly radioactive for up to 5 years (rather than a few months in a conventional nuke) and after that you still couldn't constantly inhabit the area for decades afterwards.

It is, in essence, the doomsday bomb from Doctor Strangelove. And bloody nasty.

They can call it what they like, ask them which one is better for sunbathing, I'm sure they would remember the difference.

Cobalt salting nuclear weapons is like forcing someone to listen to One Direction. On repeat.

To which, the only reasonable deterrent is submarine launched, first strike capable, hardened MIRV nuclear missiles.

As regard to the reasonable deterrent for Russian nuclear aggression...

I'd start with a stern look. Possibly with hands on hips.

Sounds a bit camp so if you do, just don't mince, it might wind them up a little bit more.

Exactly why this sort of thing is being promoted in the press to enable the government to be able to justify Trident.

We don't need Trident, but we want to stay in the big boys club, so therefore have too.
