Hi

Im stuck at the in laws for a few days and plan to escape tomorrow with the kids and dog for a walk

The kids are into the idea of bagging a 'col' and in the summer we tried and failed to get up Lose Hill and Hollins Cross from Hope

The problem was the dog, he's too big to lift over stiles and there were bloody hundreds of them so we had to abandon

So - if anyone can suggest a route up to anywhere high, pref with a trig point on top, that doesnt have a gazillion stiles on it Id be very grateful

I know the bridleways will be safe for him but would rather keep him away from bikes and horses - although as it will be midweek........

Cheers!

You can do hollins cross from Castleton without a single stile, just follow the bridle way out of Castleton

You'll pick up the path to Hollins cross from the S bend on main road in castleton. Road to start with then bridle way. Fairly sure that once on the ridge you can walk to either mam tor or lose hill with any stiles too.

Or just park under Mam Nick and follow the bridleway up around then onto Mam Tor - trig point - then along the ridge to Hollins Cross - pillar-like stone thing - and back again to your heart's content.

Alternatively, anything marked as a bridleway will be stile free. The Broken Road is good with kids as well, great views and lots of wow factor for the crumbling tarmac and again is a bridleway, so no stiles.

I'd second the Broken Road. Do a bit of online research beforehand so they learn about geology etc.

Kinder Scout is relatively accessible too albeit a bit further away from Castleton.

Cavedale is good to explore too as it Winnets Pass - albeit no trig points.

Thanks, I now have a plan

Circular walks always win in my book so we'll park at the broken road and walk clockwise with a view to taking in Lose Hill too and descending back on the bridleway

One question though - I cant see any paths off the broken road besides the one at the sharp turn off to Mam Farm which would miss the really broken bit, anyone know if this leg is stile free or would we have to walk up to the Chapel/Rushup main road to get round?

Cheers
