I know it’s a big place but I’ve got this afternoon and most of tomorrow to kill in London. I arrive at Euston at 2pm and leave at 4pm tomorrow and I’m staying Brixton. The weather looks good so I’d rather be outside and don’t mind waking miles or getting a tube a little way out. Not interested in the Embankment or the usual touristy thing in the the middle as I’ve done all those. Just want to people watch and get some exercise in the sun.

Any suggestions ?

Get lost in Hyde park/ Kensington Gardens. Lost of off the beaten track areas or perhaps lounge looking over the Serpentine and people watch.

Walk the Thames path in either direction.

Mill around Westminster and spot a politician or two.

Or hire a Boris bike and go exploring.

Southbank too central? There's loads of interesting stuff between the Tate and Tower Bridge.

Globe Theatre, Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market. Golden Hind and HMS Belfast. Interesting architecture. Plenty of pubs.

We always enjoy walking from St Pauls, across millennium bridge, pop into Tate modern to check out current exhibit in turbine hall or next door to Globe theatre then head west on south side of river all the way to Westminster bridge then over to parliament square for big ben etc, can then head up past downing street through to Trafalgar square, just across then to covent garden...much or as little as you want (albeit we're normally walking back to Waterloo for train)

:edit:...just noted touristy comment which it well might be

I'd hire a bike, probably safer than wandering about.

In what way? Plenty of people are wandering about London today in a very safe manner. 😀

+1 Highgate Cementary (and suburbia round there is very nice too), also round Hampstead Heath if you're up that way.

Stroll through Brixton up to Clapham Common. Grab an overpriced beverage at a hipster cafe then loop the common then walk to Tooting common. If it’s nice maybe pop in Tooting lido for a dip. There’s some nice streets around there if you like looking at peoples houses and wondering where the money comes from. Not touristy just normal London life

You don’t walk or cycle in London then.

if you don’t want to walk in town then there is always Herne Hill for a looksee at the velodrome then up through Dulwich village past the college and then sydenham hill wood round to the Horniman museum then back via Dulwich park. (maybe avoid Crystal Palace park as they are building a festival stage unless you like victorian dinosaur sculptures and faded 70’s athletics venues)

failing that then the river and the city which i find quite interesting and less touristy (as a Londoner) Postman’s park is quite interesting and there are plenty of old pubs hidden away.

How about a march on parliament?

I’d go with nuke’s suggestion - having had frequent meetings in central London over 20 years, it got to the point of avoiding the Tube and walking everywhere.

I'd second hire a bike, I rode from the tower out to Barons court, really enjoyed it. Kew Gardens are also worth a walk around although a little pricy to get in.

I'd go to Tooting Lido too, iconic place and not far away. Will be quiet out of season. Otherwise there is Greenwich along the Thames path, can head East, or visit the Royal Park and observatory.

Highgate Cemetery is iconic and definitely recommended for a walk. As is Hampstead Heath.

Just wander. Get off the main drags and meander through the backstreets and alleyways past the tiny parks and pubs. No time pressure, maybe just pick a general compass bearing aiming for the Millennium Bridge and get going.

If you want to walk right out the station you’ve got Coaldrops Yard, the canals and the whole developed area round the back of Kings X. Interesting to see how nice someone can make an outdoor shopping / social area look when you throw enough money + decent architect at it. Plenty of seating / opportunity for people watching. Poke your head into Spiritland bar if you are into your expensive hifi / big speakers too.

Closer to where you staying you’ve got Brockwell Lido if you fancy an outdoor swim or Horniman Gardens with a decent view of the city from the top and not many tourists about.

If you fancy a bit of art you’ve got the Dulwich street art: https://www.dulwichoutdoorgallery.co.uk/

Was in there last week in the afternoon , in the sun, Mrs kilo is a member there - absolutely rammed and a great atmosphere of people just kicking back. If the weather is good it gets really busy.

Herne Hill velodrome is locked if there’s no session on.

Or visit Stockwell Bus Garage, the most important building in London.

Temple and Inns of court are nice and quiet despite being very central, and some grand old buildings in there.

Check out the Green Chain Walk https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/walking/green-chain-walk

I've done a few bits of it and it's really interesting and more than a little surprising

Maybe get tube or boat to Greenwich or North Greenwich then mooch round the dome and nearby Thames path or in Greenwich the various sights. Then maybe overland back to centre.

Walk by the canals, eg start at KX and head west via Camden lock, Regents Park, Little Venice, Trellick Tower, Wormwood Scrubs and out as far as you want till you get tired. Walk back or take the tube.

I walked along the canal from Regent’s Park to Camden them on to Hamstead Heath and Highgate cemetery. I didn’t go in but I saw Marx’s tomb from the park next door. Hamsted lido looked really quiet and would have been good if I’d had swimming stuff.

I’m now waiting at Brixton Academy for LCD soundststem.

Tomorrow I’ll walk along the River but away from the city either towards Richmond or Greenwich. I do fancy getting the oat back

Thanks for the suggestions

We walked from Greenwich to the Thames barrier a few years back, lots of pubs and constant changes between old & new stuff on the way. Nice little nature reserve half way. Walked part way back then got to boat the rest of the way. Loved it.

P.s. what you’ve said above sounds good, will give it a go next time.

You could try The Greenway, which on paper sounds like an interesting walk/bikeride.

The Greenway is basically a path that runs atop Joseph Bazalgette's mighty northern outflow sewer. A big deal if you're into Victorian engineering. You pick it up near the Olympics place at Stratford.

I was underwhelmed when I did it, but the weather was shite and I was riding a mate's BSO.

Seconded just wander wherever. In North London. When I find the time I'll probably wander through Hampstead and over the heath again, shaking my head at memories of being there when the kids were kids.

(In what possible way would cycling be safer than walking? Safe from what? 14 yrs of Hackney here.)
