Some basic questions please, I’ve not encountered a ULEZ before.
I have to go to Heathrow airport in my dirty diesel car. I know I will have to pay when I drive into the zone, but do I have to pay for all the days the car is parked at the airport? And do I have to pay on the day I drive out of the zone?
Is paying best done beforehand or afterwards?
Thanks.

In summary - you pay on the way in and on the way out, but not while parked. Each charge must be paid within 3 days.
Have you checked the gov website to confirm if you need to pay?
Not all diesels are 'dirty' enough to have to pay.

As above though, you pay on the way in & out but not while the car is parked up.
What Daffy said, you pay per trip within the zone.
Depends how many people and how long you're going for as to whether it's cheaper, but you could park in (or get the train to) Reading and get the Rail-Air coach.
Thanks all, that makes sense. My googling failed me.
My car is liable, Euro 5 diesel.
And the return flight is late night, so don’t fancy piddling about with trains before a long drive.
Cheers.
What Daffy said, you pay per trip within the zone.
Well, you pay per day and can then drive around as much as you want, it's not per "trip".
But yes, as said, you pay on the days you're driving in/through the zone, NOT while you're parked.
Make sure you pay on the official TfL website. There are several sites that pop up on Google search offering to "help" you pay and they're all if not outright scammers then very dodgy in that they'll charge you a significant commission to process the payment for you.
My sister got done that way. Long day, she googled "pay ulez", clicked on the first site and got charged about £6 more than the official rate/

used the checker, but for London its Euro 6.
You only pay when you are on the roads, and as @crazy-legs says
