There always seems to be plenty of helpful tips for London restaurant recommendations on here. I need some tips at a slightly lower budget....

I've got an old friend from NZ visiting London at the moment, we're meeting tonight for a catch up and food and drinks. She wants to go somewhere a bit cool / different, but nothing too expensive. She's staying Kings Cross, and is round Leicester Square area today, so ideally somewhere central.

My normal go to would be Dinerama but it's not open on Tuesdays. I'm not too clued up on the whole food and drink scene. Before I resort to Honest Burger, any tips?

Big Easy at Covent Garden? Or just head to China Town behind Leicester Square, loads of good Chinese Restaurants and very good prices too.

my daughter was in a play in Southwark over the summer, and near the theatre was this place that we'd never heard of before.

Lots of different options, quite lively with a bit of music going on - mainly order at the stall and they buzz you with one of those pager things rather than 'service' but proper food and portions thereafter.

Not exactly central but halfway between E&C and Borough tube, no more than 5 mins walk from each so Picc Circus to E&C and then Borough is N.Line back to KX after.

just go to Dishoom in kings cross, dont be put off by the queue they ply you with sherry while you wait and it moves fast.

then pop into to spiritland next door for a cocktail and some hi-fi geekery.

Depends if you're trying to get in her pants or not....

I'm quite fond of Bar Américain at Zedel or the Nightjar for drinks.

+1 for Dishoom. There's also one between Covent Garden and Leicester Square if you want to meet where she is.

German Gymnasium in Kings Cross has excellent service and good food, more cafe than bar - definitely a bit different, not sure if it meets pricing criteria 🙂

Other "quirky" - The Breakfast Club in Soho, I've only been to the one in Spitalfields and it was good. It's BYO.

Edit: The one in Spitalfields has a (not very) secret Bar , as do some of the others.

Edit2: Meat Market in Covent Garden for burgers.

Perfect, thanks. Meeting at Covent Garden so got a few options to work with.

Depends if you’re trying to get in her pants or not….

Nope, just a catch up with an old friend.
