In one of the biggest car-free initiatives of any city in the world, the capital’s mayor announced on Friday that main streets between between London Bridge and Shoreditch, Euston and Waterloo, and Old Street and Holborn, will be limited to buses, pedestrians and cyclists.
Pretty awesome.
Hope the rest of the UK follows suit, although London seems well ahead in terms of transport policy.
Sounds great. Obviously easier in central London as most people already don't drive but hopefully we will see more of it. I know there are plans cut cars from more bits of Bristol.
But didn’t the govt say we had to go back to work by car to avoid public transport?
Johnson said if you can go to work, you should, but don't if you can't, but if you have to, then walk/cycle, don't use public transport, take a car if you can, but you should take public transport, or not, depending if you have a car, a bike or can walk.
Are they the actual words Johnson used?
If so there is no hope.
Are they the actual words Johnson used?
Pretty much. Speech is here:
Congestion charge and ulez back on Monday, going to be a lot of people forced back onto public transport.
The congestion charge is going up to £15 a day. £75 a week is a good chunk towards a bike.

This is central London, lots of offices, you would assume it was prime territory for workable from home jobs.

He was nowhere near that clear and precise

Oh bugger, got site visits to Greenwich, Holborn & Ealing on Monday, was planning on going by car but it gets hit by both so £25 and the parking, have to see if I can locate a boris bike or stick my own in the car for the Holborn visit.

In my place and the site meetings my wife has been at for where her office is based there’s a lot of wfh but businesses are starting to plan for a return of some sort. I think we’re working at a probable 25% return to office level. For a lot of people getting in to town will be an issue. Not everyone can cycle in and social distancing on the tube or bus is going to be nigh on impossible
Wonder why Matt Lucas didn't wear his Boris gear.. (from like 20 years ago?!)

My (former, I've been told I'm not going back at all, ****sticks) office is having a phased re-opening from June. The gods are going back (~30 ish), then in July it's the demi-gods (~300), and the rest of them (~1500) in September. But it'll all be voluntary in so far as if you have an excuse then you can work from home. It'll be interesting to see how many people find an excuse not to go back in.
Shan't link to it but the Daily Mail website leading article is an attack on Sidiq Kahn, accusing him of raising the congestion charge and making changes to charges for tube etc without mentioning that these were conditions imposed by the government in relation to the 1.6bn tfl bailout.
They had a real hard on for the fact he has a £60.000 security detail, whilst neglecting to mention the fact that he is under a greater threat than other politicians owing to the fact that papers like the Mail are constantly spewing out lies and hate about him in the hope that he gets attacked by a deranged nutter.
Worse than fox news with the fake news. Sidiq Kahn is going to be the new Megan Markle for the RW press, like she was the new Raheem Sterling (until he most articulately bitch slapped them.)
The Daily Mail can get stuffed so far as I’m concerned.
I think this is great news, and hopefully an opportunity to really change the way people get around not just London but other cities for the better in the long term. I’m working from home out in west London about 6 miles from the centre so it won’t have any direct impact on me in the near term (will be a while before our office is open I suspect!), but I’m hopeful that my borough and the adjoining ones will take the hint.
The Daily Mail is a ****ing disgrace.
The majority of our media is an indelible stain on the national psyche.
Anyway, more bike lanes = good news.
They're doing some stuff in Liverpool but remains to be seen if it will be a white strip on the road which people park over.
