Does anyone know if travelling to view a house outside of your local area is classed as essential travel? And, without wishing to be overly pi$$y, the emphasis is on 'know', I'm sure their are many opinions...

I've looked on the .gov sites, they all state that the housing market is staying open and viewings can continue, but nothing about travelling to them and I'm not sure I want to infer that it's okay without something more concrete. And we've spoken to the estate agents, they're not sure either.

I don't suppose Messrs Gove or Jenrick are regular STWrs?

the emphasis is on ‘know’

The problem will be that nobody knows, not even the government.

From .gov:
You should avoid travelling in or out of your local area, and you should look to reduce the number of journeys you make. However you can and should still travel for a number of reasons, including:
...
visiting venues that are open, including essential retail

If viewings can continue then it is a venue that is open.

and there is this caveat:
This list is not exhaustive and there are other limited circumstances where you may be permitted to leave or be outside of your home. These will be set out in law and further detailed guidance will be provided.

So I don't think you'll get a definitive answer at the moment. I'd crack on if you can do it safely (but I appreciate that is my opinion)

My brothers move abroad has been delayed until next year due to COVID, but with only 3 weeks notice. He is having to do viewings later this week as otherwise he has nowhere to live as his current flat has already let to someone else. Some common sense is having to apply and the market has to keep moving to a degree.

They're are apparently going to keep the house market open, so estate agents and house moving etc will be permitted.

Yup, it's best if we all do the absolute maximum we are allowed to technically get away with. We'll have this virus beaten in no time!

We should be moving up to scotland this month but plan on doing it over a few weeks with multiple trips?
Wonder how that stands?

Maybe blame the people making the rules rather than the ones following them. At the very least it's not really on to get angry with people who fail to follow your made up rules.

Perhaps think about how much (and how close) contact you'd be likely to have, and how "essential" it feels to you?

I'd trust you to make a better judgement than this Gov't TBH.

And wind your neck in Grum.

Sorry grum, I don't think that's fair. Housing is extremely important, therefore one of the few things that lots of people might need to be able to resolve in the coming months. It's far from the "maximum" of what's allowed. I'll hopefully be moving next week; after 8 months of sleeping on a shit sofa bed and with about 5 bits of furniture in the flat, I can assure you it feels pretty essential to me!

Apologies for being snarky but my partner is in the highest risk category for CV and we have been looking for a house for months unsuccessfully as everything good in our price range gets snapped up straight away, and now we can't even go and look at any so we have no chance. Advice for her is to stay at home if at all possible.

But our kids are in school with children of people who are basically either ignoring or pushing the rules as far as they can, so whatever we do is probably fairly pointless.

I think once we start down the road of deciding that stuff we want to do is 'essential' then we are screwed, basically. I am desperate to move out of my mum's for the sake of my extremely fragile mental health but I still don't think you could call it essential.

Grum.
If it makes you feel any better we've not been anywhere other than local rides on our own (and I've not even done that since injury in July) since this whole thing started
However moving house is rather essential to us.
We just wanted to do a few bits to the new place and move some of our stuff up while we're there.
I want nothing more than to move into the new house with minimal fuss and contact with other people.
Including a removal firm.

C'mon. that's hardly fair. Gove speaks with confidence about the rules when interviewed.

(until he's reminded of them and has to apologise the morning after)

I'm in Scotland bought a house during the earlier lockdown. Viewings were not allowed. The sellers provided a well lit video which showed some of the flaws. I know the area and the construction of the houses so I went ahead. At that time sales could only go ahead with cash buyers.
