So (cos that's how you start a thread innit) one of our minibus drivers (North Yorkshire County Council) parks his bus in the coach park owned by NYCC, in Ripon at 08.45 one morning while he nips to the loo then grabs a coffee before starting the Ripon town bus service at 09.25. Comes back to find a ticket on the windscreen.
OK so there's a sign saying 'no parking between 18.00 hrs & 10.00 hrs' but flipping heck, It's a council bus, in a council bus park waiting to serve the local community! (& It's got disabled badges in the windscreen) & apparently our gaffer has told him he has to pay the fine! He genuinely didn't see the notice & even then he may have been like me & thought it only applied to visiting coaches, of which there are quite a few daily.
That's the council for you!

PS, It wasn't me!

Why do you think your work mate is entitled to park where he likes just because he works for the council?

It dosent matter if he is in a council bus and parked in a council car park, he is flouting the restrictions

Rules are rules and everybody should be treated the same

Should all police officers be allowed to speed everywhere and not get fined?

The traffic warden/ticket inspector should of maybe waited 5 mins to see if the driver came back and advised him that the rules apply to everyone but at the end of the day the driver was in the wrong and should accept the fact that he has to pay the fine, he could appeal it and if they don't accept his explanation then just pay it and remember for next time

Isn't the ticket for the council anyway, since they're presumably the registered keepers of the bus he's employed to drive for them.

Maybe there's something in his contract saying they can deduct fines from wages, no idea what's normal for bus drivers, but would that still hold up if they're fining themselves and trying to reclaim it from him when no money's changed hands?

If he was in a union he wouldn't be paying the ticket

He needs to learn to curl one off a bit quicker.

Some of my NR colleagues got ticketed in a station carpark (GTR administered by Indigo Parking).  Trains were at a stand due to a signalling failure, they arrived at the site to find the railway side of the car park gate full of 1T ballast bags and contractors so parked against the fence (both had signs in the windows stating they were "rapid response staff attending safety critical failure" and went into the relay room). They were not blocking anyone and the carpark had loads of spaces left.

One of then came out of the relay room for spares a few minutes later to find their branded vans being ticketed, he spoke to the Parking Taliban who said they hadn't got a valid ticket so they were liable, it was pointed out that they were trying to get the trains running for the stations leaseholder but that held no water.

Note that GTR charge a huge amount of money for all stations parking passes and they are hard to get hold of.    Crazy system.

Ahh, Mr Goody Two Shoes, 1st one in!

What I personally think should have happened is that the gaffer shouldv'e said, 'ok we'll let this one go, but don't park there before 10' & told all the other drivers. (not all the drivers do that route & would probably think sense would prevail, IE council car park, council bus.
Also it may have been a different Taliban member who gave the ticket to the usual lot cos they even let the bin wagon park there when theyr'e on a break & the sign says 'coaches only'.

Crazy that we can park on double yellows cos we have blue badges but can't park in an empty bus parking area.

Council worker spending 40 mins in toilet shocker.

He had to get coffee as well!

How far away was the 'proper' place for the driver to park?

Not a goody two shoes i can assure you but i do obey parking restrictions and im a considerate parker who lives in the most densely populated city outside of London (Portsmouth) where parking is at a premium

If you read all of what i wrote you will see i said the inspector/warden could of hung around and had a quiet word and the driver could appeal the fine

At the end of the day the driver is at fault so has to take the blame, popping to the loo i can understand and feel for him as no one likes being caught short but also going for a coffee is pushing it

So he had a 45 minute break before he even started work? Could only happen with a LA.

There isn't one really. The bus park is over the road from the bus station (titchy) He could've parked in the bus bay but then would've taken up a space for another service bus.

So he had a 45 minute break before he even started work? Could only happen with a LA.

Not really, he'd already taken some disabled people from Harrogate to a centre in Ripon & had 45mins to wait before starting the Ripon Town Service. 🙂
He'd probably started work at 06.45 & set off at 07.00.

How much is the fine ? Ive boycotted my local sainsburys as they have now changed the 3 hours free parking to 2 hours, I have yet to find out what effect my boycott has had on them.

It does sound a bit unfair, a council bus in a council car park. Parking bod should have applied a bit of flexibility and common sense.

Such things seem to be lacking nowadays sadly.

Common sense is not synonymous with bureaucracy.

only crazy if you don’t understand how the blue badge scheme works! Although I guess that’s the LA’s fault for not training the driver properly. 😀

How does the blue badge system work then? You obviously must know.
Oh, & are you a MIDAS trainer? You must be.

This is pretty much what I said the last time a thread like this popped up, except that time it was an ambulance driver parked up while he/she went to buy a snack.

The interesting thing is that when it was an ambulance, people thought the ticket was outrageous. Apparently it's fair play if it's a bus though?

He genuinely didn’t see the notice

I've tried that one before, the parking nazi just rolled her eyes and wandered off as though she'd heard it a million times before. Annoying thing was I deliberately parked in a spot where the No Parking sign wasn't directly visible.

Flipside would be to say that if the council employees cant obey the rules themselves its a bit unfair to expect others to.
There may be a specific reason no parking is allowed between those times (agreement with local residents or similar) so it would actually be worse for the council workers to flout them.

it exempts you from on-street parking restrictions ONLY, it means nothing in private or LA car parks or anywhere else UNLESS explicitly specified. I’m not a MIDAS trainer nor do I know what one is, a small part of my job though deals with parking restrictions etc which is why I know what a Blue Badge means. I would expect someone who drives a vehicle with one to know what it means though, wouldn’t you? Otherwise they shouldn’t be displaying it really.
