A few of us are biking Snowdon this weekend and looking for a few beers Saturday night.
Not been for a good few years - all the locals were shitfaced by 6pm and there was a simmering tension in the Padarn Hotel last time we were there. Any recommendations for some nice relaxed beers to start and finish the night?

I can't remember which pub we went in there but I distinctly remember the same terrifying atmosphere of barely suppressed violence

Sounds like the Padarn to me! It felt inevitable it was going to kick off at some point that night

Last, and funnily enough only, time I've drunk in llanberis was very close to a catastrophe.

Me and a friend played pool with a couple of locals in The Heights. One of them was OK but his brother was seriously up for a fight. He spent a stack of the evening telling me I wasn't a true Glaswegian ( which he was right about) and that he wanted a fight with some English.

We left after a few games and managed to blag a place on some uni minibus that was heading to the campsite in Nant Peris. As we were driving along, some other mates of mine were telling me how they'd exited the pub after these guys and their mates and heard them discussing whether to jump us now or wait till we had walked further away. ( they didn't know we were part of their group).

Luckily we managed to get into the bus, but hate to think what would have happened if we didn't.

We were in the Vaynol Arms last weekend. It felt OK, mainly because it was practically empty. Huge portions of food.

I recall my first trip there, standing in the bog talking to a local chap who insisted that us Scots & Welsh should unite in hating the English. I was trying to say that most of the English were OK, but he was having none of it.

Both these incidents were decades ago, and I'm sure it has changed a lot for the better....?

yep, the Heights is your best bet. normally a mix of tourists and locals, always been friendly in there and never had an issue in the dozen or so times i've been in there. foods ok standard pub fare, and normally have some drinkable beers on, theres also a beer garden out the back overlooking llyn padarn if you don't fancy sitting at the tables in the car park

I used to frequent the Vaynol many years ago on climbing trips. No bother at all. Though I was a bit scared when I bumped into Don Whillans one night. A "sorry" seemed to placate the great man.

Me too. Mostly because we always stayed in the cheapest campsite just opposite or some folk were in the CC hut. The pub was always fine.

Not ideal for pre/post curry beers though.

Tbh I'd think long and hard about whether you really wanted to take a bike to Snowdon over a bank holiday weekend. It's going to be miserably busy 🙁

It'll be absolutely mobbed, but not convinced about the " miserably" bit.
We went up last weekend and I guess there must have been two or three thousand people within a km of us. ( complete guesstimate) but it was great. We weren't riding much faster uphill so it was fine to stop and wait when needed. When we dropped off the back it was very quiet indeed. Ranger might have been a tad stowed, and there was some utter muppet descending Llanberis at about 11am which was ludicrous.

We had to switch to the railway after the Pyg track joined as the path was wall to wall people, but I dunno. I still liked it.

But yes, if you're expecting a fast empty run down before 6pm then you'll hate it. ( think it was nearly 7 when we got to Ranger

Must have been a time before that then...def felt like a ticking time bomb whenever it was.

Not so much an issue on the way up as it'll be slow anyway.
Rangers descent will be empty compared to the Llanberis motorway - hopefully!

It might be a bit of a walk from the town centre for you, but a good pal of mine lives right next door to the Gallt Y Glyn Hostel - Pizza a Peint, so it is the only establishment in Llanberis I know. Good beer and food and a nice atmosphere whenever I've been in there. Often full though so may need to book in, though not sure if you just going in for a beer.

Vaynol been taken over by Southerners. Shut at 10 on a Friday when I was in few months ago. Heights or pizzapub.
