Announcing her departure by end of November or sooner

Or will she just dig in, barricade the doors and activate the Mark Francois emergency commando protocol to defend the PM at all costs?

Has she resigned yet?

This lady is not for turning!*
Spokesbod has just gone for the optimistic plans to remain in office beyond the 31st Oct.
Alledgedly she has asked to see him. Possibly asking if she withdraws the whip from those MPs who didnt vote yesterday does that get the numbers below the threshold.

Maybe she's telling him to get the back benches under control or the next person she sees will be the King... I wouldn't put it past her to go scorched earth on them.

This is quite likely I suspect. She'll go out with all guns blazing, she's got nothing left to lose.

Relevant as she was being interviewed in her capacity as an executive member of the 1922 committee:

Cates, who represents a Red Wall seat that flipped from Labour to Conservative at the last election, also said the Tories would be "toast" at the next general election unless they tackle illegal immigration.

I don't get this? Do they really think they can claw this back by appealing to the worst of their base?

I know it's the Trump playbook, but they've lost so much ground all over that winning a fraction back isn't going to help, I'm assuming that even people who care about immigration* have mortgages.

*in the negative sense

Anyway… we do have a thread for people to moan about Starmer “doing nothing” despite the evidence.

It's your interpretation that it's 'moaning', I made an observation, ie, that I couldn't recall Starmer giving a single interview on the telly in the last week,

I also said that it was probably a wise move to leave it to others as he hardly inspires and energizes people.

If he has given an interview this morning as claimed it wouldn't surprise me as he has a bit of form concerning turning up to the party late.

When he is PM he will probably have to rethink his strategy though, not commenting or taking decisive positions until things have moved on won't sit as well in his new role. He will have to say a lot more, I hope he is prepared for it - waiting for the Tories to implode won't be an option when he is PM, although he might still be able to leave it to others to deal with the media.

What the hell do we do?

Am I the only one hovering on this page right now…?

[ EDIT: not supposed to be clickbait, sorry… that’s a link to join the Labour party… seriously considering it this morning ]

@Kelvin - I have been thinking about that for a few weeks now. Your post made me finally do it.

Never been a member of a party in my life but this shitshow cannot carry on.

I'm going with the conspiracy theory that Boris was always coming back (Hasta la vista anyone?) and this is devious unsubtle plan to show how bad its is without dear old Boris, and the next two years sees a rise in Conservative popularity as he takes them to the election*

*I wouldn't put it past this lot in the slightest

What bullshit. Labour have been leading the government on everything from public health measures during Covid to paying the bills this winter. Time to get this indecisive party... who only ever act too late, and then find ways to funnel state spending into the pockets of their backers... out, and Labour in.

Don't give them your real email address. The amount of spam you get about pointless constituency meetings and votes is ridiculous. 😀

Not sure why you're all rushing to join the LP. It doesn't make a labour victory more likely.

im not moaning just telling it as i see it...

I just feel the labour party need to get ahead, I agree that Labour have been leading with tories jumping over to their (labour's) policies when their own fail, but the average voter won't see that, and if labour don't get ahead and be heard (im only seeing a full page of tory stories on the front page of the bbc at least) then come an election the (tory led) media will take over again and just lie to ensure they remain in power...

Tbh im sick of this crap the country is spiralling into a disaster of insane proportions, as has been said people will die of cold and possibly starvation this winter and the government doesnt care, I just want to see someone that cares about the country and the planet in power working for both. The thought of Boris and his odious cabinet back in power really makes me want to just take my kids and leave...

simple

A gross oversimplification... but the truth.

It doesn’t make a labour victory more likely.

Paid a year up front. In case they need fighting funds sooner rather than later.

What bullshit.

Honestly he might get away with it as leader of the Opposition, especially when the Tories are committing suicide, but it will be a whole new ball game when he PM - he will need to react immediately, and preferably not leave it a couple of days to comment.

Steady on, you gave me quite a fright there, I don't like this new form of comedy based on shocking the audience into nervous laughter rather than actually telling a joke.

I just feel the labour party need to get ahead

Labour and Starmer have done much better recently, although TBF being leader of the labour party is a very easy job at the moment. They're starting to flesh out some good policies on green energy and employment. This morning at the TUC Starmer promised to ban zero hour contracts and repeal the 2016 (and any new) trade union legislation. It seems the more the tories self-destruct, the more Starmer feels safe in adopting many of the previous leadership's policies. The danger is whether Starmer loses his nerve when up against someone like Hunt or Sunak.

what is a reasonably practical ‘shortest’ time?

25 days I believe

I don't think that's right. The tories would need to go through the normal bs to select a new leader first, which takes a good couple of months. I don't think they'd throw someone straight into a general election without going to the members first.

I don't think that's correct....if a GE is triggered the parties just have to get on with it..the electoral Commission isn't obliged to wait for them to elect a new leader

Well, Daily Mail says PM Truss will be out soon.

Looking at all the candidates from Tory Party I can say only Penny Mordaunt has a better chance of stabilizing the boat. Sunak is okay as tacticians but does not posses the leadership strength. The rest are not worthy of a mention. Jeremy, Chinese "influencer" Hunt can take a hike.

As for the oppositions, don't be smug coz you are in the same boat. You too don't have someone that can command leadership role. You think Starmer can? He is care taker (temporary leader).

There will be no quick fix during the current climate.

Many governments will fall as predicted. Yes, I said it in the other threads.

(apparently, think it's BBC news, already 90 governments are in trouble).

p/s: I say just pass the baton to Starmer. No need to have an election. I mean choose who? They are all incapable of innovative thinking but digging themselves into a deep hole. Oh ya ... I ain't voting for Labour btw ... LOL!

Can any of the politics experts explain something for me:

How did the fracking vote get turned into a vote of no confidence? As far as I can tell Labour are saying the Tories did it, and the Tories are saying it was Labour. Does anyone know the answer?

it wasn't a vote of no confidence, it was being used as a bell weather for whether there was still support. ie: back me in this vote or get chucked out of the party.

I'm not an expert but...

It was an obvious trap to get Con mp's to out themselves as supporting fracking which will go against them in a GE as the general populating are not keen on it.

Government turned the vote into a vote on the government/ Truss basically and really, totally skrewed it up.

A simple trap set by Labour that has exceeded their wildest dreams as even they couldn't imagine that Truss would bugger it up so badly!

Labour brought the motion to Parliament as opposed to the Govt.

Tortes don’t like the fact that the opposition took over the legislative agenda so she made it a “back me or else” Sadly it was an issue that a lot of MPs feel strongly over.
