Japan has a system of designating certain people as living treasures.

I think it is for people who have excelled but with a wider scope, so for example not a conventional super achiever like Chris Hoy.

I nominate for the STW Living Treasures:

Guy Martin
Graeme Obree

Ah yes Grayson, used to think he was a bit of an attention seeking knob in all honesty.

Then I listened to his Reith lectures as few years back and had my opinions drastically altered, genuinely impressed by his intellect and ideas.

Still have no pressing need in my life for some faintly pornographic ceramic goods, but I'm very glad he's out there doing his thing.

Martyn Ashton for sure, I don't have heroes but he's close.

I propose Sir David Attenborough

Martyn Ashton - good one, for what he has done since his accident.

Ranulph Fiennes - does he ride a bike? No, but on a national one, yes. 🙂

Attenborough - no. Very good at what he does, but it's the bit extra we are looking for.

(That of course is just my opinion. I could be wrong, frequently am 🙂 )

The Honours list does actually reflect on peoples achievements, things like honorary degree's also reflect.

Another +1 for Martyn Ashton. I don't really do heroes either but I always think of him when I wake up looking forward to a day's riding to find it's raining. Forces me to go out as I'm lucky to have the choice.

Yes, but we are looking for the extra dimension over and above their main claim to fame. Otherwise Chris Hoy would be in it.

Rebecca Romero fits with a crossover from Olympic rower to cyclist.

This fish will soon face extinction.

Let the extinction begins ... "Fishing for living fossils"
