This gives me some satisfaction:

http://www.sheffieldnewsroom.co.uk/council-clampdown-on-littering-results-in-fines-of-more-than-11000/

Noticeable that the average age is young. Why the disproportionate number of Chinese names though?

One reason why I never got into riding around trail centres was the shocking numbers of plastic pop bottles thrown by the trail for a mile or two out from the centre cafe. These would all have been thrown by cyclists, who I always assumed were right-on and environmentally aware.

Why can't recyclable cans and glass and plastic bottles have a deposit on them?

Was up in the lakes last week, disappointed by the number of bottles etc strewn around. How hard can it be to put it in bag and take it back down with you...?!

If you can carry it in full there is NO reason for not carrying it out. No exceptions.

It says in the postscript to that sheffield article "National legislation makes dropping litter a criminal offence". So does that mean those fined have a criminal record??

Sheffield uni has a lot of overseas students, lots of them Chinese. And to massively generalize, lots of Chinese people think that picking up litter is someone else's problem.

Liverpool Uni has more Chinese students than anywhere outside London, pretty sure I've never seen any of them litter, and I ferry quite a few around.

Which is exactly what Germany has done. It was in reaction to the maahooosive pile of recycled plastic bottles it was storing after it introduced recycling legislation, in reaction to landfill levys.

They started doing this where I live last year too. I believe the Council have sub-contracted the job to a private company (so possibly the enforcers work on commission) but I'm all for it as litter bugs deserve everything they get IMO. I think it's an £80 fine here.

I have seen loads of people getting busted (normally students who look like they are shitting themselves when collared) and usually have a little chuckle!

Not all of them though. There's a Chinese take-away near me has a sign in the car park which says "ONLY BASTARDS LITTER."

(Is that right, incidentally? Maybe in China it's seen as creating jobs for litter-pickers, or something?)

CBA to read it systematically so I'll make an inflammatory statement here instead 😉 :

All those with [mail] foreign sounding names [/mail] got the full £440 whack whereas several indigenous sounding folk got less, even for 2 offences in 1 case

Why's that then ?

Not just Chinese, but looked mostly foreign names - or is it just that they are folk who didn't understand the consequence of not paying the £75 fine?

In Australia you would get winos going through bins for drinks cans, popping them in their bin bag and getting money for them.
Good idea.

Why can't McSoddingDonalds put deposits on their packaging? Half the country's strewn with their crap! Is it just the clientele they attract or what?
