Off to Lisbon next week.
Apart from amazing custard tarts, any tips on places to see, restaurants.
We're going to rent a couple of bikes too, probably just to see a bit more but if there's any gems to see we'd love any tips.
That's exactly our cup of tea! Cheers!
Not sure it's cycle friendly!
mmmm pastel de nata
Pastel de nata, Lidl nice. Mine better. A pain to make from scratch. Every bars tarts in Lisbon superb. The coffee is awesome. I really enjoyed the goose neck barnacles, my girlfriend nearly threw up.
Finally, yes the people really are that nice.
Beware of the EU army I can’t believe no one is talking about this.
Time out food market as suggested.
Go and visit one of the Cemeteries (Dos Prazeres Cemetery, also has a good view) they are really quite strange over there, all the coffins are visible!
Go and visit one of the wonderful beeches (Praia de Carcavelos, my favourite) they are all easily accessible by train.
The famous tram which goes up the hill, I think there are two. And just generally wonder around, its very easy to get off the main tourist routes in Lisbon. In the evenings there are usually many great streets music performers which are worth a watch/listen.
One of my favorite cities, hope you enjoy it!
Sintra is well worth a visit, it's a short train ride away assuming you don't have a car.
Otherwise just enjoy wandering around, it's a lovely city.
Drink port and listen to jazz. The former enhances the latter. The latter drives you to the former. Never drunk enough to voluntarily listen to fada.
(And yeah it's a fantastic place with a really nice vibe. Be a great shame to see it go Airbnb and hen dos.)
Just avoid 'Pink Street' as that is a little bit Stag/Hen do centric. Plus you'll get hassled to buy fake drugs every 30 seconds as well.
Keep your pockets buttoned up.
Custard tarts * lots
We tried loads of places and concluded that Belem probably were the best, despite being an obvious tourist trap. Nice area too so well worth the ride out.
Sintra very nice if you have a day to spare.
"Bairro do Avillez" was probably the best restaurant we visited but I think there's a lot of good food all over.
Go and get Shyters down Pink Street.
Quinta da Regaleira
+1 Sintra
+1 custard tarts
Nice walk along the seat front stopping here for a few drinks: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Quiosque+Ribeira+das+Naus/ @38.7055452,-9.1414774,16z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0xd19331a61e4f33b:0x400ebbde49036d0!2sLisbon,+Portugal!3b1!8m2!3d38.7222524!4d-9.1393366!3m4!1s0x0:0x9e636ba7f6f4947f!8m2!3d38.7055447!4d-9.1414779
+1 for Sintra
Also enjoyed going out to Belem and then to the memorial.
Stay around there a few days and then head up to Ericiera for a proper relax.
Brilliant! Thanks for all these. Can't wait now.
Have a wander around the Castle of St George then get an electric tuck tuck to Cervejaria Ramiro.... the best seafood restaurant ever (& if you do have to wait outside they have a 2€ beer machine on the wall)
I think I lifted this off an earlier thread.
Museu do aljube Resistencia e Liberdade is about the resistance during the military rule – eye opening and uplifting.
Wander around the Alfama (old town bit) the Miraduoro de Santa Luzia is a nice place to hang out. Its a nice city for wandering about.
Sintra
Go for a drink on the terrace at Memmo Alfama hotel (terrace is best). It’s only a quiet place but worth it for the view if you’re in the area.
Head to the Mirador de Santa Caterina just an hour before sunset, grab a beer from the stall and find somewhere to park yourself to watch the sun going down.
Time Out market
LX Factory
Quinta da Regaleira (near Sintra)
o bom o mau eo vilao bar
Praca da Figueira (the square just next door to Rossio) – the Number 15 tram begins its journey from Figueira so it’s normally quite easy to get a seat. In Belem, there’s the 16th Century Jerónimos Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Museu de Marinha (Lisbon’s naval museum), the Museu do Combatente (the military museum) the Torre de Belém and the Padrao dos Descobrimentos (or ‘Monument to the Discoveries’).
Institute of Port wine. Just at the top of the funicular in the centre. They have a catalogue of thousands you can try by the glass, they are in price order, just open the catalogue in the middle and point.
The Santa Justa Lift
Cascais is a nice town on the end of the train line.
Don’t bother with the queues for Tram 28 and walk the interesting bits.
Mint city, loads of great stuff to see, do and eat. Gulbenkian if you like art and arty stuff. Cascais is good for an easy day trip by train to some beaches. Free-entry design museum. Caipirinhas in the goey-outey area. A trip up the Bon Jesus statue on the other side of the river. Various big churches, tiny streets, small parks with cracking panoramic views.
I'm going to be the resident grumpy, currently its 4:30am and the stag and hen parties are finishing the shouting and singing. Town has three cruise ships which have spilled their guts into the city, everything is mobbed. As above, don't bother with tram 28 or a lot of the other quick hits though the elevator was impressive.
Trip to Belem for another custard pie? No thanks.... Only two more days to go...
As someone above mentioned - watch your pockets / bags. Pick pocketing rife - missus and mate (who are both pretty switched on) had a bag taken last year from between them as they sat on a bench having a snack. They're pretty blatant!
The ones I've noticed go round with maps and rucksacks or groups on the tram where a bit of jostling opens up your pockets. The police, it seems, are absolutely uninterested and can be loudly rude and dismissive towards victims.
As above, seek out the little fish restaurants for lunch, or the time out market for a big breadboard with hams and a glass of red.
Jazz is good, port is good as is the Ginjina cherry liquor. Take comfortable shoes, it’s cobbled streets and quite hilly. Trams are good for getting about but old, crowded and sweaty and as said, look out for pickpockets.
Have a disco nap, go out at midnight.
Time Out Market is ace as is everything.
Jealous
we've a factory in lisbon (well, alcochete just over the river).
This place http://www.becodoforno.pt/en_GB/ is always a favourite. Doesn't look much, but lovely. Shuts early though, and is down a little back alley
Find a bar at a miradour and watch the sunset (the miradouro da graca has a good little bar)
if you ever do find yourself over the bridge (longest in europe etc etc) then you won't eat better or cheaper than here
