Got and 'invitation' to join someones professional network. Its a client from about 5 years ago. Its nice to think they are thinking of me. But would I be more right to think that Linkedin has just mined their addressbook and is bothering everyone on it (a la Facebock)

I'm a bit foxed as to what it is that Linkedin does. It seems like somewhere for people with 'positions' and salaries and cv's to sort of hang out and...... what? Is it Friends Reunited for former workmates? But I've not had or wanted a 'job' for nearly a decade and I've forgotten more of my work history than I can remember. And what I can remember is too much to be of use.

So (1) as someone who can't really put his finger on exactly what he does for a living, but seems to do a lot of it, what purpose could it serve. And (2) if I just ignore this invitation will he be upset, disinterested or unaware?

It's a professional version of FaceAche. Very useful for job hunting, very useful for generating interest in you/your business. Also excellent for finding real knowledge on any given industry.

More likely the inviter has sent Linked In to go through the address book and come up with you.
It's Facebook for adults. Simple networking, if you want to accept someone as a contact, accept them. If not, don't. There is no competition to see who's got the most contacts...

A good place to stalk people.

Sadly, for some sadsacks (including an ex-boss of mine) there is. Muppets.

Otherwise, you are correct!

You can use if for (honest) self-promotion, and also to make contact with people who otherwise might not think of talking to you!

If you put the right key words in the info, it makes searches easier for the recruiters.
Upload your CV and all the info can be found through searches if you allow anyone to see your details.
If they are looking for fluffers in Peterborough, put into search and up they pop.

So the key functions appear to be Jobhunting and recruitment. It seems like its no place for someone like me then.

Looking at points 1 and 2.
1. Even if you don't know what you do for a living and do alot of it, you could be doing more as even more people on the internet won't know what you do for a living either, but will pay you to do it.
2. He will know and depends on how much of a blouse he is as to whether he'll have a hissy fit.

I'm a recruiter and I use it - A LOT!

Trust me, it's good for job hunting / being hunted!

But rather than jobs does anyone use it to procure products or services. I work, but I don't have or want a job.

Its professional social networking. I suppose that is most important when you are job hunting or recruiting but it has other uses.

I use it to look for leads for my business, I've found quite a few and a couple of new avenues. It's also good for skill sharing in the groups. A bit like here really, post a question and there is usually someone with some kind of answer. A bit more spam and bit less trolling, though.

Dunno what it's all about but I found an ex riding mate (who's done amazingly well for himself) then find I've got to pay to send him a message!
They can **** right off.

No you don't, I got in touch with an old mate through Linked In and I'm on the JobSeeker Allowance version, no pay nada.

Had a few approaches from recruiters but this week I got a direct approach from Barclays.
