regenesis - thats more than a little unfair. Mods are volunteers and have to sleep sometimes and really what harm does it do you to have a front page of the forum spammed for a couple of hours?

Not sure about the software behind these forums but forum software like PHPBB and Xenforo have a "Newly register users" group that either limits the number of posts a new user can post or puts them in a queue where they have to be passed by a moderator. After X number of posts or a given time period they get moved to the "registered users" group and can post to their heart's content.

Just looking at PHPBB's settings and admins can also set a "flood limit" preventing users from starting multiple threads very quickly. I'm sure there are other settings as well, I've just not found them.

Whitestone - they’ve chosen to run this on the back of their own custom platform hence all the problems that are forever happening.
Instead of simply using a proper forum off the shelf software with all the benefits that brings.
Strangely it would also cost them a lot less to run.

@regenesis - I know at the time that the switch was made one of the rationales for the choice of s/w was that it would integrate better with the rest of the backend "stuff" but things like ACLs (Access Control Lists) are pretty basic stuff and in well written code wouldn't affect such integration. The big downside is that Drac, Cougar and the "secret mods" could end up with a lot of work which isn't necessarily fair on them as volunteers.

Every time there's a hiccup on the forum there's always someone who pops up going "my mate's 12 year old son spun up a Pokemon forum for six of his mates, I don't understand why it's so difficult" and the answer to that is "correct, you don't understand."

The STW forum might look simple, but it's actually very complicated under the hood. It ties into shitloads of systems, moving to a different platform would be a massive undertaking. I've had this conversation with Mark back when they were in the process of moving away from the old system as I too thought this, "why don't you just use xyz system, it's way better and there's a supported migration path." He invited me to visit STW Towers, which I did, they showed me how it all hangs together and I realised my naivety. I believe he has an open invite should you want to do the same.

If it makes no sense to you that's not a failing of the forum or its owners, it's a lack of comprehension on your part.

There is a restriction on what new posters can do for exactly this reason. It's currently not working properly, hence the earlier spam. Mark and Tech are investigating.

Yes, I've written a forum software package and no, it was nowhere near any standard where you'd consider it for release. Purely an academic exercise on my part to see what was involved.
