Sio my mattress is older than I'll care to admit. I don't want soft or memory foam.

Yeah, it's a what would you recommend deal!?

Go to Dreams or similar and lay down on some.  It is the way.  Every bed in this house has a different mattress on it. All are comfy but different.

My missis bought one of those Emma ones off the internet, it's OK, but If I ever happen to move off my normal sleeping position I can definitely feel I've changed the shape of it to my weight/body. No way it'll last like a pocket spring one does.

TLDR, you're right to avoid a trendy memory foam one, and garage-dweller is probably right. A memory foam topper or built in top layer might be OK.

I've got a super-king sized natural latex one I'm selling on behalf of the former owner of my new house, Tweed Valley if you're interested. No I won't post🤣

Also a bog standard sprung single if that's what you're after, the single is free to collect for an STWer

John Lewis. Try everything. We went with a Sealy Posturpedic. Both lay on it and went "oooooh".

We went to JL and bought a natural fibres hemp and feather thing a few yrs ago. It’s very comfy, has lasted well and is not sweaty at all even in hot weather.

Another Ikea vote here. go in try them and take it home. Simple and really comfy. My wife has a bad back so we changed the mattress and it made a massive difference without going for the brands shouting about how they will change your life with the healing properties.

We've got the pocket sprung Emma one with the foam top bit. It's very comfy.

I went to a bed shop, leapt on all of them and bought the firmest. Still seems good now 10 years on. Well maybe a bit softer, but maybe (definitely) I am a bit heavier. Proper springs, no foam stuff.

Just looked. Claims to have 1000 pocket springs with a medium/firm spring rate.

So firstly I should caveat that we like a properly firm matress. I'm pretty tall and weigh around 14 stone and am a side sleeper and anything too soft ruins my lower back. We used to have an Ikea one, can't remember the name and it was great. We changed bed which required a new matress. We went to Ikea and got the new version or what we had previously, the name had changed but after trying it in store it seemed fine. Neither me or Mrs jeffl found it comfortable when we got it home so we returned it. Bit odd as the one in store we found comfy. It was pocket sprung etc. The only thing I can think is that the one we tried was a single whereas the one we bought was king size. So there may have been a difference in that.

We then went to Bensons and tried a load of matresses, can't remember what we went for in the end but it's super comfy (for us), but I do remember the woman saying it was the firmest matress they had, bar rock solid orthopedic ones. It did cost a chunk more than the ikea one, but when you work it out at a cost per night, and not having a ruined back, it's negligable.

So yeah if you have an Ikea close go try them out but if you like a firm matress you may be out of luck. Otherwise go to your local bed emporium, John Lewis, Dreams, Bensons etc. and try a load out.

I'm fairly sure that the ones in store are much softer, as they've had 50 people per day lying on them for the last year or so. I suspect that once you've had them a while they might soften.

If you go to Dreams they'll make you lie on The Amazing Mattress Machine which will analyse your height, weight, body shape, sleeping position etc, and then make a tailored recommendation especially for you. The mattresses it suggests will, entirely coincidencentally, be all of the most expensive mattresses in the shop.  While you're there, you'll see another couple come in, be ushered towards the machine, and then be taken to all the same mattresses you just were.

We ended up going to JL and buying a filthily expensive memory foam mattress.  I love it.

You spend about a third of your life in bed so spend as much as you can afford. Spring count is a good indicator and don’t fall for Simba et al bull. Any mattress that fits in a box isn’t anything I’d want to spend time on.

So I find myself interested in this post as we are planning to redecorate our bedroom and replace our embarrassingly old bed/mattress (over 20 yrs old). So how much do I need to plan on spending to get a decent pocket-sprung mattress and base?

Feather and Black was the shop. We went for near the bottom of the range I think, but medium/firm and a high spring count. Felt good then, still feels good now.

I really enjoyed sleeping on my tempur and simba/emma (can't recall which) foam mattresses, most comfortable year round sleep ever for my partner and myself, but they really just don't last well.

Sounds like pocket sprung might be what you want, but not all pocket sprung matresses are equal, like everything else it seems, they can fudge the numbers on the spring count..

Never mind that, the OP is pretending it's all about them.

There needs to be more consideration given to the Biddy-in, Significant Other, FWB or Agency model 😉 🤣 🤣

Came here to say this.

Like I posted in the 'office chair' thread yesterday, you're buying something you'll spend a third of your life using.  It's worth spending an afternoon in a showroom playing Pac-Man with the sales assistants in order to find the right mattress.

They also upsold me a pair of Tempur pillows.  They were almost £100 apiece and whilst I usually hate upselling they were - are - worth every penny.

I was going to recommend the Premier Inn mattress they used to advertise on telly. Had ours since 2017 and I love it. Mrsmidlife is falling out of love with it since losing weight, so maybe it’s only good for biffers. More importantly, having just googled, it looks like the design and supplier changed in 2023, so as usual, recommendations for long term things are nigh on impossible.

We ignored the high street bed stores and found a good local place with good reviews on Google.  The one lad that worked there was helpful and polite and left us to it while we rolled around on various makes and models.  We ended up buying off them and delivery and installation was great.

It's not generally rocket surgery, but most beds require some form of construction.

I spent ages on this. Bought ikeas most expensive mattress, now discontinued i think. Best thing I’ve ever bought. Seems to be surviving well and helped my back

I got annoyed with Dreams. Less good returns policy than IKEA.  Every time i went i  they’d swapped around which mattress was on offer. So you realise that eventually mattered at some point will be sold at a huge discount. So then you wonder wether the discounted price or the full price represents what they are worth

Are we talking about building a bed, or just unrolling a mattress onto existing bed?

VI Spring. And yes you can buy a bike for that. I have a Tempur as a spare but I’m the only one that likes that. You spend a lot of time lying on a bed. Make sure it’s comfortable and don’t scrimp.

When we bought our ikea mattress a significant part of the decision making was based on the fact that in all the other bed places we wee chased around by shiny suited people on commission. Ended up trying out loads and getting one of their fancier pocket sprung ones with zero regrets. Instant quality of sleep improvement over the memory foam sweat-sponge it replaced

I've spent a fair bit of time around mattress production......most of it being mesmerized by the cam timing of Bonnell spring machines.

Isn’t the answer always an Artisan Naturals mattress? Not that I have one - yet - but seen the John Ryan mattresses talked about on other  threads…..

I can now only see Robbie Coltrane doing a little jig whilst stood half way up a marine cathedral ship engine (much to the disgust of all the butcher Italian spanner men around him) 😂
