I've had a pair of Van's ultra trainers for a few years which I wear to and from biking, plus any time my shoes might get a bit dirty but I dont want to wear full hiking boots, they've worn out at the same time as my more casual trainers, Adidas Busenitz, which I tend to wear to the shops, pub, casual day at work etc. I'm thinking I could replace both with one pair (you can choose if this is environmental/clutter/frugal reasons) but struggling to find something casual/trendy enough for the pub whilst robust enough for light outdoorsy use.
Any suggestions?
I'm very anti outdoor gear as day to day wear and think that the Ridgemont Outfitters shoes or boots might be what you're after. I've not owned a pair but they're pretty rugged without looking like a pair of Salomon running trainers.
I have a pair of Ridgemont Outbacks that I wear for work, actually a little disappointed in them but their Monty model is along the lines of what I'm after.
Also why anti outdoor wear? Hiking trousers are as comfy as trackies without making you look like a chav 🤣
I live in my mammut approach shoes this time of year. On/off so many times I have fitted Salomon speedy laces. Vans pro in the summer but may start looking for something a bit better for spending hours on my feet. Doc Martins shoes for work toe 'tecters.
I just buy whichever subtle looking New Balance models are in the sale at Schuh. Even better if you can get student discount. I commute by foot and do over 5 miles a day of general mooching about. They last alright and then get relegated to dirty duties.
I wear trainers every day but I hate stuff that look like miniature space shuttles or props from a sci-fi film.
The right answer is another pair of Vans...
I'm currently switching between a pair of Comfycush Old Skools, a pair of Skate Lows and a pair of Ultrarange EXO MTE and another pair of MTE boots which I can't remember the name of.
Vans Ultrarange are exactly what I would go for "light outdoorsy" trainers...
The MTE (warm/waterproof) versions are amazing this time of the year.
@BillOddie could be the ones, the normal ultras are very thin and really only good for drier months, does the MTE actually offer some protection? Particularly like the Hi versions but not such a good look with shorts?
A shame that most shoes don't last well and can't be resolved these days.
@cynic-al agreed and one reason I'd prefer to replace two pairs with one. I could look at resoling the Busenitz actually, uppers are ok.
MTE’s are good for winter.
Yeah the MTEs are warm and waterproof, definitely a winter shoe good for UK wet winter all the way to snow and slush.

Do you also wear your Thrasher hoodie for your light outdoors pursuits? 🙂
Ridgemont
Nearly bought a pair of them when I started getting targeted by their adds but wanted to check out alternatives. I am surprised there are not more options out there as it seem like a massive gap in the market.

But the still single you out as the kind of walloper who goes to the pub in outdoor gear*
*Which is totally acceptable if you have clearly been outdoorsing.
Nah, Dakine Technical Flannel shirt! 😉
I know youve just purchased a pair but my Ultrarange MTEs (in Burnt Ginger) have bagged munros, swiss pre-alps, rambles, scrambles, bin juice and hours in the pub and theres barely a scratch on em in their 2.5 years of hard labour

It's better to look like an outdoorserer in the pub, than a puberer in the outdoors. 🙂
