As the title really…we stopped in Troyes for a night on our way to Morzine last year and it was lush. The right distance between Calais and Morzine; really lovely place and lots of places to eat and mooch for the evening.
We’re happy to do it again but we’re wondering if there is anywhere near that’s a good stopover that’s worth a visit?
Not too far south so we can get there mid afternoon and not too far north so the next day drive is too long.
I suspect the answer is Troyes but thought I’d ask.
Cheers
Belfort, Besançon, Colmar
All lovely towns
Beaune. Couple of hours further south. Hotel Mercure is very easy to get to from the motorway, plenty of parking, easy stroll into the old town, which is glorious. After dark, they have light shows on the sides of lots of their old buildings - https://www.beaune-tourism.com/blog/beaune-s-trail-of-light. Highly recommended.
Brill, thanks. Lots to look at there.
Any more?
We did something fairly similar last year and like you Troyes was a highlight. We stopped in Besancon on the way from Dijon to the swiss border and went up to the Citadel. Do this.... its very very cool. From what we saw of the rest of town it looked really nice so worth a go.
Not somewhere to stay but a detour via Fontenay Abbey is worthwile. Absolutely beautiful peaceful spot.
Beaune
Is lovely, we stay at hotel grillon which is a gorgeous family run hotel about a 10min walk from the town centre and still close to the autoroute. Very highly recommended.
Beaune is much smaller than Troyes but great for a stop over.
I can fully recommend stopping in Laon on the way down, what a stunning place, we didn’t mean to stop but had to and so glad we did! Drive up high to the old town, the eateries are in such quintessential old French streets and there is a cathedral that makes anything in the UK look like a Chapel! Just make sure you don’t get there too late after lunchtime as food stops and there’s few places to eat!
I agree though my Fiancée’s parents have a holiday home close to Beaune, go to the Beaune market and you won’t be disappointed…. Especially the rotisserie chicken stall! Hugely popular, also just so much local and fresh food and great for a wander.
Any places around the Burgundy region have some cracking restaurants too, you pay for the privelige but really do feel you’re in the best wine region surrounded by Vineyards - some producing the best Premier Cru
Agree about Beaune. Dijon good to stop in as well.
No idea, sorry, but I now have a need to watch Blackadder again.
One place I don’t recommend was Yverdon Les bains, last year we went to Metabief Bikepark which was brilliant, stayed in Orbe in Switzerland and went on an evening to Yverdon Les bains…. Was a very odd place, I think with it being close to the Swiss border it felt like a real border town and not a nice one really. We thought we’d be getting a true Swiss atmosphere there. We were mistaken, just Swiss prices! 😂
Beaune is great.
Also - Mâcon on the outskirts.
Mâcon probably too far south but lots of nice things there.
Also stay around Forest D'Orient very close to Troyes. There's a best Western in a nice location well off the beaten track. Bit unusual.

When going down we stop just south of Calais. (Not as far down as Troyes by a long shot.)

Hotel is very good and is the food. Big rooms with aircon. Town is right on top of the autoroute and has good facilities, more so than most of rural France.
The town is a bit utilitarian as is an ex-mining place I think. Not exactly charming but I quite like it.
This only 60 miles south of Calais: we have different approach. Get all the UK side done and Tunnel, and get 69 miles south. Then we do the rest next day.
But then there's not one definite way of doing things.
You can also take the scenic route through Jura Mountain drop into Geneva. Takes a lot longer but loads to look at.
Pop into Cern.
