You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Something flew relatively low and fast over the house over the house just now.
Not really surprising as I'm 6 miles from Farnborough and its Airshow week.
What is that site I've seen linked before that seems to show a lot more planes than FlightRadar?
I appear to have lost my bookmark.
Search the forum, it's been on here lots
https://globe.adsbexchange.com/Click U at the top to just show military stuff
Edit: beaten to it by Snot
Thanks all.
interesting link, will use that in future! Something which had long, thin, tapered wings like a glider - but definitely had a propeller also (and there are no gliders that operate near us) - passed over my house on Sat, the only thing I could think of was a Reaper drone! 😳🤣 Didn't show on FR. I see there are some based in the UK, although not especially close to me. Anything else it could've been?
Anything else it could’ve been?
There are motorised gliders. Gliders can also cover some rather insane distances especially in this sort of weather.
I would have thought a drone would have stood out due to the lack of cockpit.

They can go a long, long, long way!
Most have fuel tanks capable of holding between 50 and 100 liters (13 to 26 US gallons) of fuel, giving a range under power of up to 450 nautical miles (approximately 830 kilometers).
Wikipedia 'Motor glider'.
This kind of thing?

Hungarian Saab Gripen over East Anglia right now
For obvious reasons a lot of military stuff doesn't appear... I've watched F-35's that aren't on, or just turn, turn off, and bigger stuff than that.
Not really surprising as I’m 6 miles from Farnborough and its Airshow week.
Bringing back memories of a summer job washing up in one of the corporate chalets. The year when the Antonov engine failed and another one turned up with its replacement. 2 of them parked at the end of the runway, quite a sight.
Going to be a lot quieter and less hazardous without all the Russian fast jets this year.
wbo

Looks like it took off from RAF Brize Norton, now over the Netherlands
it was almost directly overhead (and really sunny!!) when I saw it so difficult to see anything apart from the shame of the wings!I would have thought a drone would have stood out due to the lack of cockpit.
yeah, could well have been, what's that then? Doesn't look like it carries any hellfire missiles so that's a relief 🤣This kind of thing?
All a bit dull until Friday the public day but I'll ride up to Caesars Camp in the afternoons for a view.
The Korean Black Eagles were a pretty sight last week.

There is a bunch of other countries military flying out of the Brize Norton today. German helicopters, Finnish, Italian and Spanish transporters and a Spanish trainer jet.
I don't think Farnborough is doing any public days this year.
A lot of flights around or out of Brize Norton will be because Fairford was on over the weekend so all the planes will be heading home
One public day on Friday I think.
Just checked only for student as they try to interest/recruit fresh brains...
ADSB is my go-to and I even have a paid subscription to Flightradar. I find ADSB show more military flights than Flightradar but as already mentioned not all of them show up.
^ Yeah, about half an hour ago there were a pair of F15 looking planes doing some laps. They didn't look quite like F15s so I checked...and they weren't there.
Sorted - it was one F15 and one F35.
Timely thread this. Sitting on a Cyprus cliff top near Akrotiri waiting for the sun to set and we’ve just been buzzed by a Herc that was lower than us!

The big drones like Reapers use a pusher prop, the turbine is mounted in the rear, which allows cameras and avionics free use of the whole front of the fuselage.

And some are jets, rather than turboprop…

And some you’ll be very lucky to see at all, like the RQ-180, which this photo is believed to show…

Had the Red Arrows (only 7 though) go over yesterday early afternoon, though not showing up.
Followed quickly by a Typhoon (Anarchy1) which did show.
Herc just cruised past my office window, pretty low (200' according to the tracker!!) Looks like they've had a nice tour of the south coast today, just done a loop close to Peterborough and possibly heading home now 😃
As pointed out, probabsly a glider. UAV's aren't allowed to transit LL outside of military training areas.
Also mil traffic is meant to remain at 500ft above built up areas, there are exceptions though.

You may see a U2 at some point of they're still operating out of there.
it was over the sea, no more than about ¼ mile out though! Also mil traffic is meant to remain at 500ft above built up areas, there are exceptions though.
Had one come right over us once when we were camping in the Brecon Beacons, middle of nowhere, could almost have reached up & touched it 🤣 That was a proper, WTF is that?!!!! moment 😃

Ah, where are you? There are some areas at sea that the fixed wing community use for the high energy stuff, dog fighting, etc.
There a surprising amount of airspace reserved for military aviation shenanigans at sea, safer in case there's a issue for a jet to dunk in the oggin rather than in your back yard.
You can also check NOTAMS for activity to see if there are said exercises going on near you.
I'm sure plenty have tales of seeing aircraft around North Wales. Snowdonia Haa an MFTA in it, mountain flying training area, South Wales youve got avaitjon suporting training for the Infantry Battle School at Sennybridge and a few other specialist units in that area.
Bloody great place to train though.

North Kent coast, never seen anything exciting like that kind of thing though!!
Low level flying? Wales? Maybe the Mach Loop?
Mach Loop and MFTA Wales are separate areas. The UK is broken up into low flying areas for military traffic, some then have specific areas within that (see Mach Loop & MFTA) for high energy or tactical flying. They also do the same for Night Flying Areas.
The charts are out of date and open source but gives you an idea of the volume of airspace mil aviation can operate in and to ground level in some cases.
Ta. Never knew that, only ever been to the Loop.
