Can't see a thread for cover versions...so here goes.
Triple J (Aussie Radio 1 type station) does a great series where they invite artists in to record covers "Like a Version"
A couple of weeks ago was Bakerboy's version of Song 2. I like the injection of Aboriginal language and didj... sort of fitting for a Blur cover.
Another Triple J cover favourite of mine is Aurora's Massive Attack Teardrop
Ha! That was on my mind too! Love it.
Here's another cover of Teardrop by Robert Mitchell Trio I like. Probably works better on the studio version tbh.
And this Like a Version of Bitter Sweet Symphony has a little Teardrop at the end.
Well, we've got to have this then
Like a virgin
Quite old now, but brilliant. Hot 8 Brass band cover of sexual healing.
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsDUXo5TcZY&feature=share
Melvin's have an album of covers with loads of guest artists 'everybody loves sausages'
Its all good but this Roxy music cover stood out to me on first listen
I love an odd cover version. I have a collection of them. A couple of highlights:
I really prefer this to the original
Nouvelle Vague are brilliant. the name is a multi level multilingual pun as well
And the incomparable Richard Cheese
Alpha Blondy
From the Live Lounge, Arctic Monkeys, Love Machine is an old classic, complete with s****ing
Kate Rusby recorded a whole album of cover versions during lockdown and they’re all brilliant, but I love this version of Shake it Off
From Triple J a big vote for DMAs cover of Cher's Believe. Absolute belter of a cover.
More Johnny Cash, IMO this is one of the best cover versions of a song by anyone.
Also, if anyone puts up that horrific cover of Sound of Silence by Disturbed then you're wrong, so very very wrong.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U9TWwXyd050
Everclear's cover of Brown Eyed Girl
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f9rCUQjmkxU
Cake's cover of I Will Survive
Jonny Cash version of Hurt is truly fabulous. dunno what is wrong with Disturbed sound of silence IIRC Paul Simon endorsed it
Oops I did it again - Richard Thompson.
Normally hate covers, but some of the versions of Gang of Four songs on "The Problem of Leisure" are pretty listenable
Never heard that DMA cover before - love it!
This, IMO, is a much better rendering than the original - so uplifting.
Heard this yesterday and liked it too - Annie Lennox has done some interesting covers.
Aimee Mann cover of Leonard Cohen’s Avalanche
Anna B Savage - Always on my mind
One of the best Like a Versions was Denzel Curry.
Walk off the Earth do some good covers, I love their version of Toxic - the video looks like it was a lot of fun to make. They also do a great Bluegrass version of GnR's Don't Cry.
I'm a sucker for a good intro to a song and this is a great one.

The cake cover of I will survive is great, had forgotten about it.
And that reminded me of thedevo cover of satisfaction
The Tori Amos reign in blood cover didn't do it for me, now I'm going to have to go listen to slayer.
Ok, obviously the original's a stone cold banger of a tune but this version's pretty cool too-
If it's Madonna covers then this
If it's generally covers, here's a compilation (40 years of the NME) that has some great covers on it, do your own research
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_Trax
- most are on youtube in some form or another but if I had to pick one, for today, it's
https://youtu.be/kFPGpzyLOTM?t=118
- at the start it's a bit underwhelming, but you need to stick with it to 2:15 (I've put the vid to start at 2:00) - question for the guitarists. It's only a string vibrating moving a magnet and through an amp, but how can a sound be so immediately and unmistakably Billy Bragg?
Ooh - fun! I like a good cover, and especially ones that can be (subjectively) better than the original. Futureheads 'Hounds of Love' is up there already. There's a few good ones The AV Club have done over the years, they used to get bands in and make them pick a song from a list - all on YouTuve as 'Alvin Untercover' these days.
Few from me in various different-but-similar-veins.
Iron Horse Bluegrass - Rocketman
Soul Rebels Brass Band - Sweet Dreams
Kate Rusby - Our Town

Brass Against - Wake Up (without Sophie Urista weeing on anyone...)

I was hoping that someone would post up the Happy Monday's Step On.
Seeing the Fields of Nephilim post above instantly reminded me of this
Then there's this. IMO probably the best ever cover
I've always liked Curve's cover of Ian Dury's 'What A Waste'
Few I’ve remembered
Carleen Anderson’s Maybe I’m Amazed
John Martyn’s Glory Box
Secret Machines turn Bob's ditty into an epic
Ooo, I love that Aimee Mann version of 'Avalanche' +1 for Billy Paul's 'My song' too.
Krystle Warren's cover of Nick Drake's Time has Told Me.
And don't know if it counts as a cover as he sang on the original, but Liam Bailey's acoustic version of Blind Faith:
That "Somebody That I Used to Know" cover is way, way better than the original (which is one of my most hated songs).
Not sure it counts as PWEI co wrote Their Law with The Prodigy but this version smashes out of the park!!

I must be the only person on the planet that can't stand Cash"s version of Hurt. Seen NIN play it a few times live and it knocks the spots off it. Mind you, even Trent loves it apparently so I could be in a minority of one.
As for covers..... Alone Again Or by The Damned.
Love the PWEI cover. A few more:
Jamelia - Numb (was on a Radio1 live lounge)
Vitamin String Quartet (embarrassed to admit I found them watching Bridgeton)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQQfVzzptjA
Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEMm7gxBYSc
Slice of 80s pop which dates back to the 60s

I must be the only person on the planet that can't stand Cash"s version of Hurt. Seen NIN play it a few times live and it knocks the spots off it. Mind you, even Trent loves it apparently so I could be in a minority of one.
As for covers..... The theme from Midnight Cowboy by Faith No More.
Have seen both Prodigy and PWEI (back in the day) live versions of Their Law... and have to admit to liking the PWEI version more. That is a particularly good version.
The Heimatdamisch have done a load of "interesting" covers. Enjoy 🙂
If we’re going to have Tiffany (fnar) then we also need Snuff
Are artist in essence covering themselves allowed (bearing in mind it’s solo vs band and nothing like the original)
strictly speaking the Mary Hopkins version is the cover, but I offer this:
That muppets one is hilarious!
Black Betty - Spiderbait
The damned, their version of alone again or is indeed good, and Eloise is ok to but this is better....
White rabbit
The entire St Anger Album covered and remastered. Much better.
I've never been a fan of Prince (heresy apparently) but over the years I've discovered I love his songs when performed by other people.
Eels covers of "If I was your girlfriend" and "I could never take the place of your man" are excellent and Mariachi el Bronx version of "I would die 4 you" is even better.
Shirley you can’t be serious
And then there’s Brother Ray
Who could forget Sammy?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxJ5vX555eQ
Harry Styles doing Sledgehammer. He also does a good cover of Fleetwood Mac The Chain.
2Cellos With or Without You.
I absolutely hate the Mondays version of He’s Gonna Step On You Again! 😖
This is a cover, although I’m sure someone will post saying it isn’t!
And speaking of Curve…
Two covers of songs by the same original artists, by two different singers.
Ane Braun’s cover of Maria McKee, who hardly ever sings this song.
Ane covering Alphaville
Angus and Julia Stone covering You’re The One That I Want
Anna Calvi and Amanda F***ing Palmer’s stunning Bowie cover.
Aoife O’Donovan covering Emmylou Harris
Claudia Winkleman and Claudia Winkleman dropping some hiphop covers
(note at times the drummer is playing drums with one hand and keyboards with the other)
Couple a good uns recently which resonate with me:
Cover of my local band
Local cover of my uni band.
Claudia Winkleman and Claudia Winkleman
Hmmm, pretty sure one of them is Liam Gallagher in a wig
Unsurprisingly there was not a load of pink cadillacs in Bristol in the early 90s
Mark e smith cover of "Lost in music" is brilliant
Not sure If I shared this before, but Cosplay bedroom rock did benefit from Covid a bit I reckon:
Apparently they're now gigging in full costume...
As used in ‘Natural Born Killers’…
Calexico’s version of ‘Alone Again Or’
Covering Yes is a challenge, but it can be done…
