You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
As a software developer it's obviously expected I'll be able recommend hardware products to friends and family so I've come here to ask for help.
Requirements;
Business use
Lightweight (1kg - 1.5kg)
14" screen
All day battery life
Just a laptop (no need for touch screen or converting into a tablet)
Windows
Budget £800
Any suggestions?
I get Lenovo thinkpad yoga’s from work. They seem ok.
Dell Inspiron
( Refurb - with warranty )
Lenovo Carbon X1
You're a bit ambitious on weight for that budget I'd say, unless you go reconditioned/outlet.
In the Dell range (for example)
The 13 inch Inspirons start at about 2kgs - well within budget though.
A 13 inch XPS starts at 1.2kgs and they are £1600...
Latitude 5400 are getting cheaper as they are about to be replaced I think, sneak under 1.5kgs, start at about £1000 now (inc VAT).
I really like the 5400 I have for work, but glad I didn't have to pay £1500 for it...
This seems to fit your requirements,

Processor is probably overkill but it's in budget,
1.6kg
14" screen,
512gb SSD
8gb ram
My Dell Latitude 7390 fits that. Maybe pick one up in the Dell outlet at that price?
A tablet and a Bluetooth keyboard?
What's "business use" when it's at home? That could mean literally anything.
I just take that to mean 'no dedicated graphics card required' 🙂
Hah!
I'm assuming it's a euphemism for "email, web and a bit of Office" - y'know, like every other laptop in the known universe - but could do to clarify that in case there's some sort of hidden extra requirements.
I use an 13” HP elite book. Until it fried its battery last week it was great. I now have a replacement of the same. It’s still great. You’ll struggle with all day battery life, but a small usb-c charger is not so bad. I also carry a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and a laptop stand.
Sat under the desk on a docking station at the moment
Yes business use = 'just Office and Zoom calls', not watching movies, playing games etc.
She seen this one which is 1kg but she doesn't need a touch screen particularly.
She has an ipad Pro but didn't really get on using it for work with a keyboard case. I'm not going to win any argument around tablet plus keyboard, her current laptop's a Lenovo convertible job but it's a bit smashed up and the camera has stopped work, screen's cracked etc.
Focus on weight is she cycle commutes now so doesn't want to be lugging a massive weight of laptop round. Hoping to get a working day's battery life so she can leave the power brick at home too.
Doesn't meet your spec requirements, but after seeing it mentioned in the recent Zwift update about getting nicer graphics, I looked up the Huwaei Mediapad M6...
£300 from Argos https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7261464
Thinking about as a Zwift and portable browsing machine for me with a nano sim card, also thinking it might be a nice machine for my mum to use as she's been squinting to read/watch stuff on a Nokia 1 mobile!
Hoping to get a working day’s battery life so she can leave the power brick at home too.
If you can find something that'll power off USB-C that might solve this issue?
Unfortunately, with any laptop, you'll have to factor in the additional weight of a power supply and a laptop bag, and possibly a mouse and a few cables....not just the weight of the laptop itself.
But from what you described you just need a smartphone !?
If it's just home and office, just buy a second power supply (or have a dock at work) to cut down the carried weight.
I think this is PCPro's favourite at the moment and seems to meet your requirements https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=133S6EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB
I just picked up the Acer Swift 5 mostly for a job search (have an iPad, but know that some job application sites don't like Safari). Love how lightweight it is, I've loaded Office 365 after removing all the bloatware from it. Seem fast enough for what I want (documents, Zoom meetings). Agree I didn't need the touchscreen (and haven't used it). I does have the power button in a crap spot too, but that just makes it sleep if you hit it instead of the delete button. Only had it month & it seems fine.
