Hello, some thoughts on small tents from the hive mind if you please?

I'm looking for a lightweight, simple to pitch, robust tent for bike and walking duties (e.g. looking after d of e sliver candidates in the summer).  Favourite so far is a wild country zephyros 2, (or a laser if the premium bonds come up).  I think the few extra grams is worth the additional space over the 1.

Any horror stories, or alternatives that you can recommend (or you can try to flog me your second hand gear if it's in good nick).

Oh, and can someone with a zephyros 2 tell me the folded length of the main and end poles (do the short ones fold)? They look to be a shade long for my frame bag.

thanks

T

It's a nice tent but the single hoop designs can be a bit if a pain if the ground is uneven or too shallow for decent pegs. If your camp spots aren't ideal then something more freestanding like the vango helvellyn might be better.  If you know your camp spots will be good then single hoop is fine. I agree that the extra space is worth the weight - I like to be comfy when supervising DofE - especially as I'm out for about 7expeds a year!

I use an MSR Hubba Hubba on all of my expeds. Poles fit in my framebag on a medium rockhopper and it's light and sturdy. Not cheap though!

How light are you looking for? We have a Mountain Hardware Solitude for sale, vgc for £100.  It’s 1.5kg.

Blazin-saddles - thanks that's pretty much the same weight as the zephyros by the look of things, but from what I can gather perhaps a little snug (the name suggests one person, or a very close friend?).

Good point on the pitch stevious - that helvellyn starts to get a bit heavy though.  That MSR looks nice (and my wallet would be lighter too!) - is that pole arrangement as complicated as it looks?

edit: i should have said, preference would be 2 kg or under really.
