Hi all, I want to save my files from RAW to Jpeg ready for printing. I am looking to print at A3 size. what setting would you use?? It's more the image sizing I'm not sure about. My last prints have been good but I have never been sure wether I am using the right settings.
It's not unique to Lightroom, but I believe the general consensus is 300dpi. Thus for an A3 print, 16.5 x 11.7 inches, you want to aim for 4950 x 3510 pixels. Don't upscale though to get this resolution if you have a lower resolution to start with.
HOWEVER, if it's going on the wall, and you you can get away with 200dpi quite happily, so 3300 x 2340 pixels (or even 150dpi if you're not overly fussy).
PS, also use a high % for quality of JPEG.
Are you printing at home or using an online place?
in the export dialogue you can set your destination folder (working on the basis that you'll save jpeg's in a different folder than you RAW's?)
Scroll down the export menu and you'll see File Setting - click on Image Format & change to JPEG
Scroll down again to Image Sizing* - I use Resize to Fit > Longest edge (type in the size you want, making sure you use teh box nect to it to select cm, inches, etc) & Resolution at 300ppi (though that is for online services, printing photo's - check what resolution your printer works at and adjust accordingly)
If you scroll down you can also apply sharpening on export, if you like. I tend not too. That's mainly because I drop images into PS for final tweaking - cloning etc and sharpen them on exporting from PS.
* i'm 'old school' currently print pretty much everything to standard 6 x 4" (3:2) ratios = the native format off my sensors so, if I want an 18 x 12" print i export at 18" longest side and that's it - resize done. A3 is not (i think) a 'standard' crop ratio in LR but it's pretty straightforward to set one up.
