I know there's a few lego fans on here. I'm looking to set up something similar to what I had as a kid - a table covered in lego plates so that I could build on it.

It looks like nowadays base plates are less common than they were and about the cheapest decent sized ones are at least a tenner each (628 64x64 plain grey) and a bit dull in comparison to the craters, etc that I had.

So, suggestions, other than just forking or a load of cash?

We've got a small plastic table, with a reversable top, (one side lego, one side smooth table) with lego storage underthe table top. There's loads of different types availabe, ready made. They can be pricey though.

I remember those. They were the space range. Got some at home in mums loft in my lego collection.

www.bricklink.com
but don't expect to pay much less than new prices for secondhand (but otherwise unavailable) stuff. Lots of crater baseplates for sale there.

Have a look on sites like DH Gate or Alibaba...you can probably get something not branded as Lego.

Was in Smyth's toys taking advantage of the 20% off and the ewok village looks mental.
The batman Tumbler is what I want.

Thanks all.

ebay is not really any cheaper than buying anywhere else unfortunately and it seems that a tenner or so for each plate is about the best there is - just makes a table with six plates pretty expensive 🙁

Do you know anyone with access to a 3D printer?

Funny you should say that actually 🙂

that'd probably work out more than a tenner per plate though, wouldn't it?

The grey baseplates are still on sale at Argos, plus they are currently doing 3 for 2 on all toys so it is £16 for 3. You'll never find them cheaper than that!
