You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I know we've had a couple of discussion touching on this, but I don't think we came to a clear decision on the best way forward (and I guess it's different for different situations anyway).
I have a legacy Google Apps for Domains set-up which our family uses, so it's not a business account and it doesn't really justify the £4.14 per user per month that is Google's cheapest migration option (anyone know whether that includes VAT or not?). My domain is hosted by Ionos (was 1&1) and I set the MX records to point to Google. Ionos offer free email forwarding, including a catch all. I also have Microsoft 365 Family so potentially 1TB each of storage there.
I think my options are:
1: Just pay Google. Easy but expensive
2. Pay someone else for email hosting, migrate the data (mainly photos) either to another online service or to OneDrive. A bit more work and not a lot cheaper.
3. Set up standard free Google accounts, move everything across and use the Ionos email forwarding to those new accounts. Free, but what are the downsides?
4?. Is there a Microsoft 365 option? They seem to offer custom email domains but only if your domain is hosted by GoDaddy, and (I think) only if you are in the US.
Have I missed anything? Anyone in the same situation made a decision yet?
I'm leaning towards just paying at the moment...
There is allegedly some solution coming from google which you can sign up for. Not heard much though.
This covers a lot of the issues.

I'm currently wavering between zoho and self hosted.
Following with interest. Currently thinking of paying for two, migrating the one with my purchased films etc to a free and ditching the remainder with diverts at my domain registrar.

I completed the survey and registered my interest in this - but have also heard nothing further. I did hear that Google were surprised that so many users were non-commercial, which is a bit odd since they specifically advertised Apps for Domains as being ideal for families. Thanks for the link to Ben Tasker's blog, interesting stuff.
If you have M365 family already, you can add a single domain to it (which will become available to all family users), even if it's not registered by GoDaddy. You have to do some fiddling around (create some DNS entries, register an account with GoDaddy but don't actually migrate your domain to them) but it is possible. There's guides available if you search.
I was in the same boat, and migrated (via google takeout and IMAP) to M365 Family and got my (non GoDaddy) domain setup with it. I found a years sub for £60 on offer on Amazon, and needed the Office apps anyway, so it didn't work out too badly.
I also completed the survey about 'options' but didn't hear back either.
Just checked last invoice and they are £4.60 each, 0% vat must be exempt
I had basic web hosting with GoDaddy.
After years of not bothering up check alternatives as the two domains renewed at different times and I always left it too late, I got round to it this time and the cost for a .com and a .co.uk with privacy dropped from about £48 p/year with GoDaddy, to about £14.50 p/year with Dynadot.
(I'm just using them as a registrar so this doesn't take into account anything that GoDaddy may have included that Dynadot doesn't)
I had a sot of related thread about this yesterday:-
Still not quite sure what to do. But as I understand it what Google might offer to those that fill in the survey will not involve a bespoke domain email addresses. Or am I wrong?
Is it fair to assume that if, say, someody had no idea what you lot are talking about, they're not involved in this ?
😳
I was all set to just pay the 6 quid or whatever to continue using Google Workspaces, but then I found that Apple iCloud+ include support for custom domains and email addresses. As I was already paying for this in order to get 2Tb of storage I just repointed my domain at Apple and binned the Google workspace account.
But as I understand it what Google might offer to those that fill in the survey will not involve a bespoke domain email addresses. Or am I wrong?
Maybe.....the survey has been removed. Instead there is now a promise of a form you can fill out to join a waiting list, but the form is not yet available.....
The deadline has been pushed back to end of June, but that still leaves not much time to get yourself sorted out.
So, rather than leaving myself open to the vagaries of Google's internal machinations, I'm switching.
I'm going to try mailinabox:
Currently trying to register a temporary domain to try it out with. I've got a linode instance fired up running ubuntu somewhere in London.
Well, setting up Mail-in-a-box was remarkably painless.
I've bought a second domain to try things out with, and I now have email to/from that, from gmail, working just fine, after a couple of hours of following fairly straightforward documentation.
I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do about backups - MIAB generates encrypted backups, but Linode *also* does backups.
I think the migration path probably goes something like:
1. copy all the old emails over (IMAP?)
2. use the gsuite option to migrate to a regular gmail account to preserve whatever can be preserved
3. tell MIAB about the new domain
4. switchover the DNS
I've switched the DNS, and email now goes to the MIAB mail server instead of google.
I can still access the old gmail account but I imagine it will slowly stop working since I don't intend to pay Google anything so it will be suspended.
I have another gmail account (regular, not g-suite) and after adding that to my phone, the phone seems (so far) quite happy with that.
I've had to export/import contacts and calendar events manually. Maybe there's a better way (the "take out" option, but that seems to be ridiculously complicated?).
One problem I've found is that the Android Gmail app on my wife's (Samsung) phone does not properly recognize the emails in the MIAB server - it knows they are there but all of the content appear to be stripped out, so every email is from Jan 1 1970 with no content, no sender and no recipient. Very weird. Using K-9 email instead which has no such problem. It works fine on my Pixel 4a.
I really don't get why Google thought this was a good idea though - they could have charged a nominal amount and I would have paid up, but instead they've successfully ensured I will avoid Google products if at all possible in future, in case they pull the same stunt again.
Looks like they have changed their minds, as long as it is for personal use and you have 10 or less accounts

Well, that's good news. Once again procrastination has been the winning strategy. It's amazing how many problems simply go away if you ignore them.

Indeed. I saw an article entitled 'tyranny of the tidy' a long time ago now that suggested that by trying to enumerate and stay on top of all of your tasks in a super organised way you were actually giving yourself too much work as most things will sort themselves anyway. I had actually signed up for the paid version of gsuite yesterday but I've got 30 users on that account and it was a business one so wasn't getting out of it (unless of course I just lied about it being personal but there is a whole other thread there 🙂 )
Well, that’s good news.
@onewheelgood - don't forget to press the button to migrate to the new free version. If you don't they will upgrade you to the paid one in June
Well bollox.
I drank the coolaid and am now paying. Arse.
I did take the opportunity to transfer to a new domain name which I couldn't have done otherwise.

Done!

Don't procrastinate if someone is offering you free stuff.
