I have a job offer for a good job but leaving an equally good one just because I cannot settle in my current location. Trying to think of some fancy career orientated excuse to tell boss tomorrow rather than the whiney homesick excuse.
Ideas gratefully received!

Is the current location Yorkshire. If so leave, your life will be better for it.

I'd rather be whiney and homesick than a whiney liar, just tell the truth.

It's not whiney to realise that there are more important things in life than who you work for.

I just turned down a great job offer, not likely to come my way again, because I really didn't want to move.

Many years ago I did the same. If you don't like where you live and have an opportunity to move somewhere that you would like, why would you not do it? Granted in my case the only thing that was tying me down was a mortgage as I was single with no other commitments.

It's as good a reason as any, and easier for the boss to deal with having no management issues. And you won't leave a bad impression.

I knocked back a job offer a couple of weeks ago, reason being that there's absolutely no chance you'll see me moving to the South East.

You should leave and move to where you,ll be happier. An unsettled home life isn't worth a bit of loyalty to your current employers.

Go and explain your reasons and I'm sure you,ll be met with respect and a decent reference should you need one.

Out of interest where are you and where are you going?

I moved out of Eastbourne to London a month ago because I couldn't settle in Eastbourne. Turned down a counter offer by the company for me to stay but I just couldn't bear to live there anymore

As above, just tell them the truth.

Or don't give them any reason at all.

Your choice, but I can't see the point in making something up.

Exactly this.

It's your life to do with as you want to do. Remember - you could get hit by a bus tomorrow, or later today for that matter.

Tell the truth. No problem with people looking for issues or crap like that.

Tell the truth. Once you have left, you will not care what you told them. Move on, be happy.

Tell your boss that it's because of the location but not directly. Bosses don't like being given information straight, they like to think they came up with stuff themselves. So something like.

"I'm leaving because you're a Southern puff/Northern Monkey (delete as appropriate) and quite frankly, your attitude towards gravy/jellied eels sickens me so I'm leaving for a job where the water actually gets you clean/leaves you slippery all day."

About 3 weeks after you've left he'll work out what you wwere going on about and say he fired you.

I left a job on the basis that the area was too flat and too expensive to live for somewhere I didn't want to be.
I now live half way up a hill, surrounded by hills.
