A friend has asked me to ask the collective about Leather Recliner Sofas - are they still a thing for today or something better left in the 90's? She seem this as an ideal tool after a long ride/lazy evening for watching rugby or the footie.

We’ve just ordered some, will let you know in 15 weeks if they’re a waste of money, but I doubt it.

I’ve got one, it’s ace. Comfy, adjustable and tough. Got it from a bloke from Oldham on Gumtree along with a big armchair. Deals with seconds and ex-display. Only had a couple of scuffs so purchased for £800 as opposed to the £2k retail.

My sister bought a couple of leather recliner sofas and found this as being a problem.

Because of the mechanism, theyre effectively 3 chairs all together. What this meant is it wasnt comfy to lie on, as due to the steel bits there was separation between each which mean each had a ridge.

So instead of a nice long piece of foam, the 3 sections mean you had the ridges sticking into your back.

You use the recliner bit to lie down. At least I do when I’ve fallen asleep on ours 😀

Ours is a two piece and so well padded you can’t feel the join if you lay across it.

We’ve had a Himola two seater leather settee and a chair for over 30 years. Comfortable and reliable mechanical operation- push back with your upper body and then pull a loop for extra reclination (Tm). They’re being replaced in a few weeks, much to my regret, and will probably be free!

Two two-seaters from DFS (not from the eternal half price range) , probably ten years old now. Electrically operated, never missed a beat. The leather is soft but probably not the toughest, two adults and no pets currently so not really a problem. We have one each and sit on different sides so switch them over occasionally. The only issue is with the buttons - the top bit makes the footrest go DOWN, which makes no sense, probably easy to fix but just can't be bothered.
And I second (or third) the confusion with not being comfortable to lie across, which seems to miss the point of RECLINERS.

Get electric powered ones with a USB port down the side, had one for 5 years and it’s brilliant 🤩

I’m torn. Mine cost me a chunk of my redundancy and I didn’t like them at first. I don’t really think the electric (which I have) are any better than the manual lever ones. The leather creaks by my right ear too, which is annoying. I think they’re G-Plan and I reckon I could’ve done better for the money.

We've got a pair of an earlier version of this. Ours doesn't have usb but has a bit more detailing on the arms. It's a faux smooth suede'ish material and looks really good. Hard-wearing and easy to clean too - ours are 2-3 years old and look great still with two cats

With my ex wife we had ridiculously expensive Italian leather sofas, frigging uncomfy….I used to love going around to my mums to sit on the leather recliners. My mums are from DFS. I’m trying to talk current missus into getting some.
For chilling out watching movies and sport they’re awesome.

We have a fabric covered recliner that's now ~15 years old and literally starting to fall to bits on my better half's side, she has used it far more than I, when I'm in I'm far more likely to be at the pc desk until early evening.

I really fancy a leather replacement, thinking the covering will resist wear much better, but she's adamant we won't have a leather one... I keep reminding her that the sofa is to be sat on, not eaten, so her vegan diet isn't a valid reason. 😉
