Front Lawn looks a bit yellow and tired. Was wondering whether to bother with all the treatments this year, seemed to spend a fortune on feed and moss remover last year and it still looked crap. Getting fed up with the effort it takes to keep it looking decent.

Is it too early to scarify as I may borrow the neighbours, as it looks like there is lots of dead grass/moss underneath.

Also spotted another neighbour had cored loads of holes in his and just discarded the cores ontop the grass, is this to aerate the lawn?

In a previous house I used that really shit stuff with moss remover (evergreen), which is missing the N off the front! Nearly wiped out the whole lawn, really should've looked to see if the lawn was grass, it wasn't, it was pretty much just moss. Maybe yours is similar?

I'll be attempting to cut the 2ft long yellow and green grass this weekend. 😉

I think as long as its reasonably dry you can do that whenever

You can definitely cut now if dry. I did mine 2 weeks ago. I'd wait until April to start the feed and weed.
There is loads of moss in the garden this year although I'm tempted to leave it, I mean why is moss worse than grass? Last year I used Never green and it look like my lawn had been napalm striker a couple of weeks later. By the end of the summer the patches had almost gone just before the moss started to grow again.

Thinking about getting a new mower. Our lawn is small and shaded so the grass needs to be in tip top condition to survive the kids running all over it. We have the cheapest Flymo, it has plastic blades and can either cut too long or too short.

The next model up has a metal blade and variable cutting heights, and collects grasss. I think it'll help.

I moved from a Flymo to Bosch rotary electric, night and day difference in ease of use and cut quality. Worth spending a little extra imo

when is it ok to lay turf? the fron'lawn' has been lying fallow since last summer. I have had to cut what grass there is cos daft neighbour fired up his mower last week. 😕

The Bosch is amazing for the money, I wait until my neighbour cuts his then hack mine, his looks amazing, mine is a wreck, he spends his weekends tending to his lawn, me, I mow the dog eggs once they hit double figures.

I don't think my lawn's big enough for anything other than a hover mower. I'd spend more time manoevring it than pushing it, and it's got a steep slope on it in places.

Best time is either now, or sep/oct IME.

I wouldn't lay turf now unless you can guarantee to keep it watered through out the summer. Wait til autumn

I'd lay turf now tbh. It's likely to be kept wet, but if it isn't then it's not hot enough to dry it out, but still warm enough to get it growing. I laid mine at the start of the hot part of last summer, roots were down and working in a few weeks.

For maintenance, look at a local company to do it for you. Our new house had a great lawn when moved in, but it had been empty for a year and the winter did for it. I was just looking into sorting it when we got a leaflet - £22 four times a year - the guy did it for the old couple that lived here so I assume he can get it looking as good again - and £88 seems a bargain, certainly cheaper than I'd spend in treatments + faff

Lay turf now or Sept/october. Sure we'll have plenty of rain still to come for it to take. For those saying don't use 'Never green' you must have done something wrong as it or any own brand product should be very effective in moss killing and greening but must be used carefully. A very fine and even distribution or it will burn your lawn, the grass must be dry to touch but not during drought conditions and it needs to be rained or watered in within a few days of application and no kids running around on it till it's watered in. Obviously if your lawn is mostly moss though it will not help.

I'd fork or core it, I extended my patio last year and used the lifted turf to fill a long strip of bareness down one side of my lawn. This section is now the greenest and lushest part of the lawn. I put it down to the turf being loosened off and aired a bit during the lifting/relaying process. I'm giving it another week or two then I'll be forking or coring the whole lot and reseeding/feeding it.

First cut when the ground is firm and no more hard frosts to come. Will be waiting another week or 2 here on the south coast as it has been so wet this winter. Spiking the lawn will help aerate it and improve drainage which is all good. I'll be doing a moss kill and feed on mine this weekend.

Try using lawn sand for moss killer it always works good for me no burnt patches. After that I use Aftercut every 4-5 weeks and plenty water during the summer

Bought new mower, tried cutting grass. The worms have been busy all winter, it's so lumpy had trouble pushing the damn thing.
