So we moved into a new house in January with a 100ft+ garden, pretty much all lawn, plus a front lawn. I rented a petrol mower over the weekend to neaten up the savannah a little, but it’s going to need regular maintenance.
As of next week we will have a proper workshop/garage to store a lawnmower, so what would STW buy (or get the in-laws to buy as they kindly offered as a housewarming gift).
I've got a Honda mower and its has been great for 5 years. I change the oil yearly with the stuff that goes in the cars. I Buy 5 litre cans for that and use rest in the mower/ top ups. It had one service at the garden machinery place 2 years ago.
Get the next size up mower from what they recommend - that makes life easier for you and maybe consider a self propelled mower for your garden length.
Really depends on budget but definitely go for something self propelled. How level is the lawn? Do you want stripes? If not don't bother with a roller as it will mean it's easier to mow if the grass is damp.
Can you get from back to front easily, could be easier to get one for the back and a small possibly electric or battery for the front.
Also, possibility for formation mowing display with two!
BUT, Sit on mowers make it easier to get local yoof to to cut grass for you for minimal wages!
Biggest Honda izy.. fast, reliable, lightish and cheapish.
I use one professionally on gardens where I can't or don't need to use a roller mower.
I bought a second hand Harrison with Briggs and Stratton from eBay for £35. It did 8 years, I sold last year as it was rusting and someone gave me £15 for the engine...
I bought another from our local dealer. I had gone to go get a Viking new, but they had a trade in for £50...
Im in a new house and need mower as well, unsure to go petrol or battery though. My garden is smaller than tours though but too big for an electric mower.

Some of the new bigger battery mowers look good. They are a bit pricey though.
I bought a Mountfield battery mower at the weekend. It came with two 48 volt four amp hour batteries and a charger. When you tot up the retail cost of the batteries and charger it comes to the same price as the whole kit!
It'll easily do my 100m² garden on half a charge of one battery.
I've got a Honda Izzy and a big garden (takes 1 hour to mow front and back). It's great but I'd be tempted to go battery next time purely to avoid having to get petrol twice a year. I'm that lazy.
I bought some 'own-brand' thing from B&Q (which has a Briggs & Stratton engine). Apart from needing to replace one spall part (my fault for pushing it under a bush and snapping it) it has been faultless for the last 4 years. Tomorrow will tell if it continues to start first time with minimal (read no) maintenance. All I ever do is ensure I use fresh petrol at the start of each year and check the oil level.
Get a Husqvarna Automower and spend your weekends/evenings doing stuff you like.
You don't even have to pick up the cuttings.
+1 for a Husqvarna Automower. I have a flymo 1200r (which is a rebranded Husqvarna) for my garden and can't recommend it enough.
We're considering getting 2 to do my elderly mums lawn (600m2) as they are currently £510 at B&Q which means that 2 will still be cheaper than a Husq 310 (which is what they recommend for between 400 and 1000m2) plus we can sell her ride on mower to recoup some of the cost...
Before the STW army get up in arms at the thought of paying £1200 to mow a lawn, consider that it currently costs about £30 a week (£780 a year assuming 26 weeks) for her to get a gardener in for the lawn alone....
