I use high speed lasers in stourbridge.
I don't think they are that busy at the moment so may be worth a try but I'm not sure how fast they can push stuff through. They normally quote us 5 working days on large orders.

Usually a 5-7 day turn around for Stainless Steel.

How accurate is that sort of cutting?

If I wanted a chainring made (with a CAD pattern - replica of a vintage one) would it be precise enough or would it need finishing?

It'll be very accurate but the edges will need a clean and it is just 2D so no profile on the teeth

To the OP, I use Laser Process. Always 5-6 day turnaround including postage.

It's quite accurate, although it can only cut in 2D, so would likely need some degree of finishing or profiling for the teeth

EDIT: +1 for laser process, it's who I got my dropouts from and were the best on price

Might be worth checking with local engineering universities- we do some small scale industry work, we've got all the kit sat about doing nothing for long periods

Where are you Northwind? GeodieLand Univ?

Do you do prototype cutting if I can get the drawing up? 3D?

🙂

Really? I'm currently studying engineering at loughborough and asked quite a few people and nobody even had a clue about who I would able to go to get some stuff done.

POSTED 13 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

Some if those universities don't even know how their own kit works 🙂

Seriously I am looking for someone that can help me prototype to see if it works. I can pay but my budget is low.

🙂

Send me an email (if you like)

projectioncomponents142 - AT - gmail - DOT - com

We get large batches of stuff done pretty much weekly.

@Chewkw, I'm up in Edinburgh. Always makes me sad to see all the machine hall empty, then I go home and piss about with my ridiculous unimat toy lathe. But to be fair if they gave me access to the big stuff I'd mill both my arms off.

^ as northwind say, when i was doing Mechanical Engineering/Cad at college in dumfries (the most ****in useless place of education in existance) we had machines sitting idle 99% of the time and despite hassling the tutors and college management they would not let me anywhere near them, they cited health and safety issues but the real issue was the fact that the tutors didn't have a ****ing clue how the vast majority of the machines operated - i knew more about them than they did.

So i used to go into my dads workplace (big engineering firm) and play about on their equipment which was vastly superior, in 1995 i took a modified marin pine mountain frame with an upper timing belt pulley mated to my crank arms and a cnc'd wide rear sprocket with a gates power transmission drive belt into the Gates factory in dumfries where the belts are made but i couldn't raise any interest at all - those ****ers stole my idea!. 😀

When I get my CAD drawing done properly I shall be in touch.

Precision laser cutting might be the way to go for me.

😀
