So my laptop has been diagnosed with a faulty mother board / graphics chip etc - it's potentially £300 to fix and will only have 3 months warannty. I'm not rolling with cash so would only have £300 to spend - what should I get?

Replacement laptop or tablet?

I've got a notepad & a desktop so the work side is covered, this would mainly be for web & media & kids to use.

(oh and do knackered laptops have any value / what should I do with it once I retrieved my data?)

thanks!

Check ebay for spares/repair value of similar items - would be worth a few quid to someone depending on make/model.

Tablets are ok if you don't mind the smaller screen & you store your media elsewhere. I don't like typing on them much personally, for £300 you'll only get a run of the mill Android one not an ipad unless you get a monthly 3G contract & pay for it that way.

As per Dave, ebay for the bits or to sell it off, though get the HDD wiped first (there really easy to remove and either pop into another laptop or a caddy and run dban on it) and again as long as your aware a tablet is not a laptop, and has limitation then go for a tablet as it sounds like just what you need.

£300 would buy a nice 1st gen ipad from the apple refurb store or a decent spec 2nd hand one though. Nothing has yet to convince me that any of the android ones will work as an ipad (I need a job so I can justify affording to buying one!) but that doesn't mean you should discount the competition - wander down to your local dixon's (et all) and try them all out.
