I have a pretty crappy Asus VivoBook.
It takes ages to boot up and can be slow at times.
I have strange problem that only happens when using Excel. Sometimes when I click on a cell, the screen can flicker of go completely black. This only ever happens with Excel, not with any other application.
Any ideas what might be causing it? Can it be fixed?
Sounds like a graphics issue couple of quick things to try, make sure your graphics driver is up to date, and go into graphic settings and disable hardware acceleration - all dependant on what your graphics chipset is you might have to do some googling.

burn it burn it with fire, then your excel issue with it, will be solved.
Try re-installing office, though if the hardware as crappy as you say, maybe replace or upgrade, so it's less crappy
disable hardware acceleration
Thanks Fooman. Went into Excel Options and disabled it.
Seems fine now.
burn it burn it with fire,
I understand where you are coming from. I will never buy another.
I just wanted a reasonably priced laptop with a large screen. Didn't expect it to be so bad!
When it dies, or I kill it, I will replace with a mini PC and decent display.
Luckily it's not my "main" PC.
Might be worth doing a clean Windows install, will probably improve performance quite a bit if it's full of Asus bloatware like most laptops.
FWIW Excel has been getting flakier for the last 10 years, does all sorts of weird things.
