Make sure the hdd isn't over 80% full, if it near that backup & remove stuff. Closely followed by download and run a temporary file cleaner like Ccleaner (ignore the reg cleaner bit) or TFC. Remove any programs in your startup folder. Literally the folder in off your start button -> All programs called "startup" (you can move them into the main menu, rather than delete them, and so return them if they turn out to be essential). Remove what programs that you don't need running all the time, from the notification bar (icon by the clock), by right clicking the icon and changing the setting to "not start @ startup", after that it can gets a little complicated editing the MSCONFIG

Cougar virus check with avg and microsoft for the spyware check
Run Malwarebytes, then.
An online scan with ESET wouldn't hurt either.
Look at add/remove programs (XP) or 'uninstall a program' (W7) and remove anything you don't need. Particularly, anything that pertains to be a 'toolbar' or anything that's obviously guff.
I can take a look remotely if you like.
I'll have a look at all that too thanks, mine could probably do with a looking at too
@zippy has it - I'd be quite surprised if that doesn't solve it
If your daughter has lots of stuff she wants to keep (photos/movies etc) move them to an external drive, lots available quite cheaply.
