my laptop has stopped recognising my usb pen and cds?

Is it Vista?
I have seen this before with USB pen drives but not Cd's. You need to delete the USB devices from the Device Manager, not too sure about the CD drivers though!
Is it Vista and has it updated with SP1?
Mine did this last week and I have just had to re-install the SD card reader driver.
Right click on My Computer
Select Device Manager
See if the Network Card / SD/MMC device has a yellow triangle and ! against it (mine did!)
Have a google for the drivers needed and manualy install them.
Best make a restore point first so you can roll it back if nothing works!

the laptop has windows xp installed and will have a look at the device manager and the google sugestion very clever
