Mother in law needs a new computer to replace an oldish desktop. She wants a laptop for space reasons...and has asked ,e because I once worked as part of a wider ICT team as a Relationship Manager (so clearly I’m an expert 🤪)
I use a Lenovo at work and mentioned I was happy with it, she likes the look of this one.
Will be used for browsing and low level website maintenance/e-commence
Anything else she should consider.
Chromebook?
About £200 and spot on for what you want.
There was a thread yesterday.
I use an Acer from Argos.
£1k laptop for a bit of surfing? A touch overkill. Also worth looking elsewhere than Argos as you will likely get a better machine for the same money of equivalent for less.
If she's happy to learn a new system which is very easy a Chromebook sounds perfect. Unless she relies on specific software that is.
£1k laptop is fine so long as they like it. Buy the best if money is not an issue.
Many years ago I had a Dell laptop that cost about £2k for work and that laptop lasted me almost 10 to 12 years.
Now I just have a laptop that is a balance between performance and specs.
A thousand quid will buy 5 chromebooks with an update lifespan covering 25-30 years.
Buy a decent chromebook for a few hundred quid and use the spare cash on a Google drive sub and the whole thing will be copied into the cloud so if it fails she can just log into a fresh chromebook and it will be just like the old one.
I personally wouldn't worry about buying from Argos as their returns are good and they're probably close by.
If she does need windows for a particular bit of software this is £500 and still overkill from the sounds of things: https://www.hotukdeals.com/share-deal-from-app/4026594
12 core i7 for surfing the web 😂
Stick to something about £500 if wanting a laptop and not a chromebook. Massive overkill that just won't be used, and will potentially have a much shorter battery run time - that may be more important.
an ipad is actually the correct answer.
move the MIL onto on one about 6 years ago and she's never looked back.
👍an ipad is actually the correct answer.
having said that the latest iPad Pro with the keyboard is significantly more than a grand!!
+1 for iPad and keyboard of some description. Logitech make a fantastic case with a keyboard + trackpad combination that's about 1/5 of the price of the Apple one. Obviously don't buy direct from Logitech, but frequently on sale for about 40% off.
iPad is surprisingly mouse-friendly. Only thing that doesn't work well are route plotting apps because Safari doesn't translate mouse clicks to touch events properly.
My aged on parents on Ipad = no mithering.
Aged mother in law on Windows laptop = constant mithering and our fears of her online banking being hacked.
with an actual mouse? 🤔 Never actually tried one! Surely no real point, the Pencil is so good (especially apparently since they introduced “hover”, although my iPad is too old to support that 😭)Only thing that doesn’t work well are route plotting apps because Safari doesn’t translate mouse clicks to touch events properly.
another vote for a chromebook
if a fullfeature laptop is a must, have a look at Tier1 for their as-new refurbs

Depending on the recipients age then faster is better. Some older people can get "antsy" if they have to wait for anything in a "time is pressing" manner.
