My North Face Borealis is falling to bits so looking for a replacement. Needs to take a full size laptop daily, plus some work papers etc and will be in combination of cars/trains/planes. It won't be used on bike regularly.
I could get a new Borealis - any other suggestions ?
I have the NF Surge, which I think is bigger than the Borealis. It has some annoying features, but I haven't found a better one, and it really swallows a lot of stuff for travel etc.
I have just bought one of these DHB Luggit Lugger 40L from Wiggle.
I was looking for something for travelling and this was by far the best value, especially as I wanted max hand luggage size. Decent quality and a good laptop sleeve.
I wouldn't want to use it on a bike though, too big.
Not a backpack (but what's the point in asking STW if you don't get answers to the question you didn't ask) but I have a Timbuk2 d-lux messenger in large:

Black one is smart enough for work stuff. Takes my beefy work laptop (chunky 15" mobile workstation), ipad, papers and will also fit a change of clothes for an overnight trip if I need it to.
Could go a size smaller if I didn't need to fit overnight stuff occasionally.
Have a look at the Berghaus Terabyte range. Have a 25 and have found it excellent. Can get larger capacity ones also I believe
some great ideas so far, looking at them I reckon I want around 25 - 30 l max size
Osprey Flapjack here. One of those dependable bits of kit that you end up feeling very fond of. I use it on a bike, did it daily for ages, very comfortable. Can also take a change of clothes, including work shoes (just).
Available in messenger bag or backpack form.
I have a Crumpler rucksack (Belly XL) which is four years old and used daily which has been great. This model is no longer available but they do lots of others.

I recently bought an Osprey Flapjack courier bag to use when I do not need to carry so much and am quite pleased with it - got it for £40 in the Evans sale.
This review of ten laptop bags from The Register is worth a read.

Those things Footflaps posted weigh a ton even when empty. Forgot to add the Flapjack is very light - my colleagues were jealous of its light weight even when it had two laptops in it...
The Register rated the Swiss Gear one as their favourite.....
Thule Crossover, won it as a prize in a race, great work bag and overnight if needed.

Have used a Crumpler Cheesy Disco, which I think has been replaced by a Moderate Embarrassment, for 7 or 8 years now. It's been all over the world with me, to many thousands of customers and hundreds of flights. its comfortable, bullet-proof and so waterproof you can do this:
If I was back doing road-warrior duties, another crumpler would be the only way to go.
I have used a JanSport backpack for over 10 years - possibly nearer 15. It's been used a lot - daily when I'm working and now carry round laptop, text books - basically lots of heavy stuff.
5 minutes on the website would suggest that the nearest current equivalent is the Tulare - obviously in black to avoid that trying too hard to look like a teenager thing.
Can't testify whether current build quality is as good, but mine is still going strong
The SwissGear packs may be heavy but they are seriously tough. Mine's 5 years old, used daily, carries far too much stuff, and is still going strong.
great, thanks all.
I have just gone for the : Swissgear GA-7301-14F00 Hudson 15.4 Inch Laptop Backpack
looks ideal for my needs
Osprey just as tough and a fraction of the weight.
