Hi
Looking to get a new laptop for my missus. She’s currently got an HP, but it’s about 7 years old now, and the power connector is broken. The battery also won’t hold any charge, so I think it’s probably better to replace it rather than invest any time or cash in renovating it.
The dilemma we have now is whether to go for Mac or another Windows-based laptop. The Which reviews all seem very positive for MacBook Airs – but are they really that much better than a mid-range Windows laptop?
It won’t be carried about much, so the superior battery life and lightness of the Macs aren’t major factors. It will only really be used for web browsing, email, iPlayer, so nothing very taxing.
We want a machine that will last; some of the reviews I’ve read suggest the Macs have a longer life span than Windows-based laptops. A Mac would be a learning curve for me, as I’ve never had a Mac before. The MacBook also don’t seem to come with a built in DVD drive – the official Apple one is another £65.
By comparison, the Lenovo I bought last year for myself was only about £350 and seems to have proved perfectly capable.
Appreciate that there’s probably no right or wrong answer here, but would be glad to hear any options.
Cheers all
I think you've already answered you're own question. Macs are no better or worse than Windows based computer. They are well built and charged a premium for it. Buy an equivalent price laptop and you will get the same quality but probably higher spec.
We have both Macs and Window based laptops and both have their merits but price versus performance and build quality the wife's Lenovo Yoga laptop takes some beating.
Get another Lenovo, I'll go halves with you on the grand I've just saved you.
There are good reasons to move to a Mac, but none really apply to you. It'd be like buying a BMW X5 to pop into town on your own once a week.
