I know you lot like a challenge, and lots of experts on here, got a couple of inscriptions on an antique item that (so far) haven't been identified. Possibly Sanskrit, but no confirmation...
Any ideas?
think you might need a google account. I'll see if i can share the images properly...
What is it?, Where's it from? How old is it?
Dunno but curious what the item is!
Edit: and I can see the pictures just fine without being logged in to Google.
Edit 2: Until the links vanished, that is...
A skateboarding parrotlizard?
To me, with not much knowledge of these languages, it looks more like Thai or something than Sanskrit which is quite square looking and less loopy.
And this is the test from the original request. No idea beyond this, just though STW Linguists/Historians might be able to shed some light...
The parakeet is a vehicle for the Hindu god Mahadev, who with his consort represents sensual love. Inside the parakeet are indentations which might have been used for some form of sacred perfumes (?). Also on the two halves of the parakeet are inscriptions for which I have been unable to find a translation, in spite of asking around in India and Sri Lanka. They might be Sanskrit. If translations are found, they might be able to shed light on the precise purpose of this intriguing item
Though a bit of googling puts the parakeet with the god Kamadeva, so, i dunno...
Isn't it Hindi?
Reading through this article it does look like the Sri Lankan or South Indian languages... none the wiser though.
Would love to find out as well, watching this with interest 🙂
The original request comes from someone who is (fairly) well connected in India, so i would hope that they've asked a good number of Indians before posting!
If not, i'll be having words.
Looks like pheasant, so I reckon the inscription is a prophecy "beware tweed clad bell ends in range rovers" or something
We should have our resident Assistant Professor in Assyriology on tomorrow's cafe ride. If I remember, I'll ask him...
Have a look at the tamil alphabet and numbers.
Your item 2 pic is upside down
It looks very much like one of the Burmese/Myanmar alphabets.
