Elderly parents having phone problems (with TalkTalk) and wondering if it might be the digital switchover which is due here this month.
Can anyone explain to this Luddite what happens/needs to happen to get their landline through the switch. TalkTalk's site seems to be pushing folk to get a full digital fibre upgrade, which they are not interested in. They are proper landline Luddites so mobile phone only isn't going to work for them.
Or if anyone knows anyone secret to get any helpful response from TalkTalk that would be great - currently 20 minutes into a 5 minute remote test!
Regarding the phone luddite thing we had the same with the mother in law.
We bought her a Doro mobile with a charging cradle and a cheap monthly sim and encouraged her to use it. Within a short period of time she was using it all of the time and complained if someone used the landline because she couldn't hear them properly.
Three months later we cancelled the landline and in her case broadband that she doesn't use and saved over £50 per month thanks to Sky fleecing old people.
They are proper landline Luddites so mobile phone only isn't going to work for them.
Luddites or not they are going to have to deal with it as there won't be landlines in 2027. I think the only options are mobile phone or digital home phone via fibre (keeping phone number and phone - unless very old phone)

That's what we're trying to get to the bottom of - they've had nothing from TalkTalk or anyone else to say what is happening or what they need to do.
Seems more modern modems have a socket to plug a phone in to go digital?
For me, it was a case of throw the DSL splitter in the e-waste, then plug the phone in the phone socket on the modem (mine has 2x ISDN connections too), and the modem plugs directly in the wall socket instead of the splitter.
That was to be done on the morning of the switchover. Get home in the evening and hey presto, VOIP via ye olde phone. Might have had to login to the router/modem to turn on the VOIP feature, since it had only been DSL Internet up to then.
I added a DECT handset later, cos the modem just happened to be a DECT base station too.
