Did a proper comedy Manuel from Faulty Towers drop of my phone today and ended up chucking it across the room where the screen smashed when it hit the ground.

So I was thinking about these rugged phones and the Land Rover one comes with OS maps of the country programmed in, anyone tried it in place of a garmin or heard of anyone who has one? I was thinking of selling my garmin to fund the purchase.

You know that’s going to be utter tosh. For what it’s worth the processor can also be found in a £31 smartphone from wish.com

If you’re thinking of one as a second phone, then maybe. Pricey for what it is though.

Just get a proper phone and a decent case. Then you'll have a much better device then that thing.

Plenty of better tough phones around for less money. Look on Amazon for Ulephone or Blackview. I have an Ulephone Armor X5 and can't fault it.

I have recently made a move from a OnePlus 5T with a Ulefone Armor X as an outdoor phone to a Ulefone Armor 7 as my only phone. The Armor X was infuriatingly slow, and even though I only took it when I was out on my bike even basic stuff like messaging people or taking photos was dreadul. The camera was appalling too. The Armor 7 is a decent phone, fast enough for use as a main phone, the battery is huge and lasts ages and the cameras are OK.

It weighs a lot, though...

Interesting though with the piggyback GPS/battery add-on. Can you still get that? If it's dead cheap I wouldn't dismiss it as a bike GPS (that's also a basic smartphone).

On the software, I use ViewRanger on Android and it's pretty good. The OS maps you can either purchase each map as usual, subscribe for all the OS maps (£25 a year) or do what I do, and buy 400 credits for a fiver and then just buy map tiles - which solves that old problem of being in an area that spans 2 maps.

Anything branded with a famous brand known for something else will be rubbish, think JOB tools. Buy a proper phone and a case.

Work gave me a ulephone ip68, tough bugger. Only have whatapp on it and a malfunction form app and that's about as much as it can handle, call quality is dire and the camera is useless. Have to take my Nokia with me to take snaps.
Working as an agricultural fitter, crawling over machines with 2 phones in my pocket. One a "tough" phone. One a phone. The Nokia is holding up just fine, no case. The ulephone is just a lump of heavy useless rubber.

I like the griffin survivor extreme cases for the Apple stuff.

Launched the phone a fair few times and it’s done it’s job.

My Lifeproof case equipped iPhone 8 has been dropped countless times, been through the wash on a 30deg cycle for an hour and generally bashed/laid on etc in my pocket when working.
The case is a little scruffy after 2 years but the phone itself is absolutely mint inside.
