I've got to drop off a relation at university in Manchester on Friday. I have an American friend staying too. I wonder if it might be possible to include a quick road trip through the Lakes on the way back while we already on the M6. We will only have an an afternoon and early evening of daylight.
My friend is a keen landscape photographer. Can anyone suggest a route with some good views that loop from the M6 south to north?
Off the M6 at J36 A590 marked *shudder* 'Barrow in Furness' follow the A590 all the way down to Newby Bridge than take a right at the roundabout A592 marked 'Bowness & Windermere' - follow this road up past the lake and through the honeypot of Bowness, 'awww ducks and geese poo and old ladies and japanese tourists' - Just after Windermere take the A592, Kirkstone pass. Follow it up, very dramatic, Hellvellyn on the left, highstreet on the right. Down to Patterdale and Glenridding, follow the road past Ullswater and past pooley bridge and then the road comes out virtually at Junc 40 for Penrith. There should be plenty there to Photograph and plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat or a coffee, Glenridding in particular is not buzzing with tourists as much as other parts of the lakes are. You've also got Aira Force waterfalls on the shore of Ullswater which is a pleasant gentle stroll. Or brothers water is quite picturesque at the base of Kirkstone with dramatic mountains all around. Have fun!
Edit: if you wanna save a little bit of time come off at the same junction and go past Kendal and Stavely straight to Bowness. But the A592 past Lake Windermere is a lovely bit of road if the weather's nice.
Perfect, thanks
Or just head up through Windermere to Ambleside and Keswick, lots of photo opportunities and a taste of the Lakes.
Stop of at Biketreks @Ings/Cafe Ambio or Wheelbase/Wilfs @Staveley on the way past
