Holidaying for a week with the better half in Lagos, Portugal, we are staying with family friends and want to give them a break from us for a night or two, any recommendations of where else to visit within an hours drive (have a hire car), not sure how easy it is to simply turn up somewhere randomly and find accommodation for 2 nights only?
Silves is nice for a visit if you like old villages and a castle. Vilamoura is the exact opposite of Lagos. It's basically a purpose built resort around a bay, like a mini Las Vegas. There is a huge choice of restaurants and I imagine the nightlife is good (we were there for lunch). If you play Golf it's probably paradise.
We spent a night in Faro as we had an early flight, it wasn't great, best avoided.
Portimao could be worth a look?
Stayed round there surfing a few times. I'd head for Sagres, which is worth a visit and about an hour away, into the national park, lots of nice coves and beaches down bumpy tracks (carrapoteira) up the atlantic coast. Never been high season so dunno about accommodation. I'd probably just use booking.com or similar.
Sagres & Cabo de Sao Vicente... world's end!
Take a drive up to Monchique in the hills and have lunch in the square, then drive up to Foia - the highest point at just below 3000ft - amazing view where you can see the Algarve coastline almost as far as the eye can see. Did it last year - lovely drive and you can have a beer or ice cream just near the top 🙂
Go for a days mtb'ing? Nice flat coastal route or good downhill tracks from Monchique. Bike hire and guide in town - nice chap.
Definitely visit Sagres for the day, and if your'e driving that way you could spend a night in Salema which is a small fishing village with nice walks along the coats.
any of the beaches along the coast up from Sagres such as Praia De Arrifana are worth a stop off and the national parks are good for a stroll or two.
Check out Aribnb for accommodation once you have a vague plan. saying that there's plenty to do in and around Lagos to keep you busy and if you needed somewhere to stay for a night or two i can give you the details of a local who rents out their apartment which is just off Praia Do Pinhao

Should really cycle up there. Was out there 2 weeks ago cycling in 40C!
