Hi guys

For some years now I've been lactose intolerant, or atleast my body doesn't respond well to dairy. Upset stomach, bloating and gas is what I get.

Anyway, in the new year I'd like to get myself into better shape, I could do with gaining weight, and ideally I'd like that to be muscle.

Now although I've done this before without dairy, it's a whole lot easier with dairy weight gainers and protein shakes. As I also struggle with nuts etc.

So has anyone got any recommendations on lactase enzymes, or shakes that seem to have worked for them while they are lactose sensitive? Or don't they work at all?

Experiences and opinions welcome

Lactose free protein if it’s 100% whey isolate. Avoid whey concentrate - full of lactose.

Lactase is easily bought - make sure it’s a high dose. Holland and Barrats is a low dose but cheap.

Some vitamins can have lactose - go for vegetarian/plant deprived.

Your body doesn't know protein shakes exist, if you do dead lift, squat, pull-ups, dips and overhead press twice a week you will gain muscle unless you eat too few calories, but this is unlikely to be the case.

Guys who gain a lot of muscle over short periods are either genetic freaks or juiced up, building dense hard muscle that doesn't disappear when you have a few weeks off takes years to accumulate.

The most important things to get right are intensity and volume and to get the form on the compound lifts nailed, leaving the ego at the door also helps.

I think what i'm trying to say is save your money.

Pee protein.

Sorry, I mean pea.

But yes, I think from experience that carbs are the thing you need to recover and build muscle - you probably already eat enough protein.

I'm lactose intolerant, can't drink normal milk. However, I'm fine with prettt much everything else - cheese, ice cream, whey protein and so on. Milk (obviously) has the highest percentage of lactose so you may find you can tolerate whey protein powder.

Try and get as much of the required protein from real food (get used to liking chicken if you don't already!!) but supplement it with a protein shake if you need too.

And yes you need protein, it's what the body used to build muscle. Just carbs isn't good enough, but you also need the right amount of good fats. Getting your macros right and eating enough good calories is the hardest part of building muscle.

If you have to, Form Nutrition protein is good. Also check out Nuzest.

I'm now very lactose intolerant. Couldn't drink milk since late childhood, then yoghurt became problematic in 20s and by 30s couldn't even eat cheese anymore without dire "repurcussions". However, once I discovered lactase tablets 3 years ago (from holland and Barrett or Amazon, although doses are not all the same so need to figure out how many you need of each) I can happily indulge in cheese, or food that has been prepared with milk (so always have a few stashed in work bags, car etc). Still won't drink the stuff though; blurghh...

Can't see why you'd need more than chicken, fish and a variety of veg.

I thought I was lactose intolerant. Also thought I had asthma.

All turned out to be H Pylori and I’m all good now.

I’d only had it for 35 years so it’s quite a life changing diagnosis. I’ve even got hair growing back. 😳

Thanks very much guys. Some good suggestions.

I'm aware you don't need supplements. But you do need them to make life easier, that's all they are there for! When you have several diet restrictions, anything to make it easier is a bonus

Cheers

Protein as opposed to carbs is what you want.

I'm also lactose intolerant and have been really impressed with the vegan protein extreme in the vanilla creme flavour from TheProteinWorks.

Good luck!

Also lactose intolerant, and I have been using Form Nutrition with Arla's milk (=40 g of protein in a serving) for the last 5 months to help me build my muscle back up following my ACL reconstruction. I agree that proper food is better (post gym today I could go straight get a decent lunch), but using protein shakes on odd occasions stop me snacking if I can't get a full meal straight after the gym (it takes an hour to get home from work), or I fit a session in the evening and dont want a load of food on my stomach before bed. Also stops me being hungry at 3 am after heavy exercise day whilst trying to loose some post surgery weight.

Its not cheap, but it tastes good and it doesn't give me a bloated stomach etc. Probably use 1-2 a week and along with real food and some hard work, I defiantly have muscle coming back.

unless you have some issue with absorption that you haven't told us about then I'm going to assume you eat properly therefore do not need supplements. If you don't eat properly then you should start to eat properly thus negating the requirement for supplements.
