Blair might be scum, but he is smart scum. The only leader to give Labour a 2nd election victory in a row, he did so by pretending the party had stopped being Labour and had started being something else.
He knows that having a chancellor who excels at smug scheming ineptitude and a leader who, left alone to tie his shoes, would manage to tie his hand to his foot and hop around before falling over in front of a photographer is not exactly a recipe for success.
