Do you want to learn to **** people up or get fit?

Easier ways to get fit and martial arts training always carried too many injuries for me.

Depends what you want
I suspect you will get [ or feel like you have got] some quick gains as it is designed to take normal folk and make them proficient in self defence.
It will. as always, depend on how good the teacher is.

none of the people I know who have tried it [ each being multiple black belts holders] thought much of it but they are not the target audience.
I have not tried it myself.

Any martial art is only as good as the practitioner. Try it and if it's for you, all well and good.

It's pretty good, very realistic training. Great fitness. Failing that, muay Thai or MMA is also very effective. I know for a fact that many of the chaps in Poole and Hereford do a fair bit of it.
Avoid anything with coloured belts; overly choreographed and too many rules.

I did it for a year.. was very good. I learnt loads of defense techniques with no pressure to do belts. really all about battering the attacker before they attack you. I do ju jitsu now and a lot of it is based on that.

I think he was referring to mr fairbairns combat system but it was developed for WWII commandos not royal marines (RM didn't have the commando title at the time, it was mainly army units). He and mr sykes developed a rather lovely knife (I have one on my wall).

Tried to resist but had to bite.

The Royal Marines were formed in 1664, albeit it under a different moniker. We took on the Commando role in WW2 if that is what you're referring to.

I did KM for three years, didnt do any of the gradings but progressed along nicely and did a lot of seminars and that. I enjoyed it but the nature of it is repetition and i got bored with it eventually and gave up. You wont get taught any of the 'offensive' (military) side of it by a proper KM instructor it will be purely self defense and techniques to end assaults as quickly as possible (think about attacking eyes, bollocks that sort of stuff). Some people think its a bit underhand in that respect, but getting physically assaulted is rarely solved through Marquess of Queensbury rules!

Some KM instructors include boxing and kickboxing sparring elements including the rules of MMA and those sports as a secondary to the defensive techniques as well, but if you want to spar regularly, take up one of those sports. KM also teaches the mental approach to dealing with assault - which you may not get at MMA type sports as such because essentially they are sports with rules and referees (however anyone who is good at these sports will also be good in a fight generally as they are conditioned to it mentally and physically).

The final thing I would say, and the thing i really thought was good at KM, was the multiple attacker scenarios and techniques to deal with this. I say techniques because most likely you will lose but there are ways to get out of it if your skilled / confident / quick / strong or a combination of these.

Give it a go its usually pretty cheap and im sure you will get something out of it - oh and purchase a good strong 'box' (groin guard)!

Depends what you want from it. If its to defend yourself after a couple of near misses etc I'd rather adjust where I go etc than take up self-defence.

If I was to take something up now it'd be boxing or Aikido.

Not because I need to, just for fun/conditioning.
