Payplan has an interactive map of UK debt (well clients they are helping):

http://www.payplan.com/ukdebtmap/?postcode=

Amazing how big the numbers are for debt, near me 23 people owing £2m between then.

Those figures include secured debt though, so potentially mortgages?

If so, the levels aren't that bad.

It's whatever they have defaulted on and have set up a debt repayment plan for. So yes, mortgages could be included - although at a total stab in the dark guess, I'd expect more non home owners to have debt problems than house owners?

Ahh, I used to be a credit underwriter, trust me, its waaaayyyyyy more mind boggling when you see the details.

"I owe 60K on maxed out accumulated credit cards, i'm rubbing my Overdraft up the wrong way and I missed two mortgage payments in the last 2 years... you know what? I want a new car..." 🙄

The really annoying thing was we knew KNEW that if we said no, someone else would say yes.

I do not miss that industry...

I'd expect more non home owners to have debt problems than house owners?

Can't say as to now, but while tenants were generally more committed, they tended to get by treading water and not go bad. i.e. you're gonna miss payments to your landlord, not your mortgage provider...

Hang on you are going to have to humour me because I am a bit twp, are we saying that these are debts that arent a mortgage?? Or does the mortgage come into it if you have missed a few payments?

The "debt" is the total debts of the individual which are included in the restructuring by Payplan, so it may or may not include mortgages.

Scary figures. We seem to be doing not too bad though. Looking at all postcodes in the county only 2 people advised, 1 new debt management plan, with an average debt of £19.5k. Admittedly the population is only 20k of which 81.3% is in work which helps.

It's interesting, but not really all that informative - this is only people who are in such bad shape that they have to go to this company for help. In Bearsden, population 28,000, that's 135 people.

Not really surprisingly, people who get in that much trouble end up owing a lot.

Its pretty meaningless. Correlated to house prices and job vacancies would be better.

What this country really needs right now is a government backed housing bubble to sort this debt mess out.

I think people are confusing "no debt" with "no one has used this particular company to resolve problems with their debt"

Payplan is the biggest debt plan company, mainly as it's completely free and supported by all the banks / credit card companies (and CAB) who pay it's running costs. So it will cover a fair chunk of total debt in plans. Obviously there are loads of sharks out there offering the same service but with a huge up front fee included (to add to the debt).

23 people owing 1.2 million in my area of Carmarthenshire. I don't know if this is good or bad. What I think is good though is the number of skips appearing outside of peoples houses- they are feeling confident enough to get building/ renovating.

Sadly all governments think they need to fuel growth with debt, so the cycle will continue. Seems to be the only plan they have.

Meanwhile the economy is global, banking control and tax is national.

Then they moan that banks dont lend, but why should they lend if the business plan dosent stack up.

Mortgages will be handed down from parents to kids soon as the terms will have to get longer and longer.

Short term head in the sand politics.

The purpose of politicians is to get re-elected, hence Osbourne's insane house price inflation government backed over committed mortgage plan. Just keep prices up till the next election, then it can all crash again and they'll still blame Labour for it!

96 people and £9.6M here. I presume that this is not mortgage based debt. So £100K per person. I can believe it around here.
