I have to fit an extractor fan for the kitchen. It has a brick sized external vent.
I have a decent hammer drill with attachments for drilling and chipping but just need reassurance one what I'm attacking with my tool.
Do I chip the mortar from around the brick as close as possible or the brick itself?
Use a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade, so easy youll be shocked, just use on the mortar though, and wear goggles.
I wouild drill the brick as closely together as you can until its a full of hioles then use a cold chisel to break away the rest of the brick. I assume a double skin wail so you will need to repeat on the outside
Got a jigsaw as well.
The outside brick will be easy enough, then. What is the easiest way to do the same inside brick? Will the internal and external bricks be aligned?
What about the cavity wall filling?
probably find the inside brick doesnt line up.
Is the extract outlet rectangular all the way from outer vent panel to inner connection? Does it not go cylindrical in the wall?
If you have access to an SDS drill you can hire diamond hole cutters that correlate to a half brick size. If you get one with a long enough shank you will be able to drill through both walls in one go. To drill out a brick sized hole simply drill two side by side and if necessary square the edges off with a hammer and a cold chisel.

It has a run of hard plastic ducting that connects to a convertor to that changes it to a flexible drier type pipe.
The outside vent is brick sized.
Just punch it really hard?
IGMC.
The inside will likely be some kind of block rather than brick. Unless it's a three story house I would expect it to be a thermolite block which are fairly soft.
Will the internal and external bricks be aligned?
I don't know how many brickies you know but I don't suppose too many are bothered about lining up internal and external walls. Lean up against a wall and look up and see how many of the perps line up!
The outside and inside brick wont match up. I would put a single pilot hole from the outside in.make the pilot in the centre of the outside brick then do as mentioned above and remove the mortar round the brick.
Then you should know the centre of the brick hole, then mark the size of the vent from the centre and drill a series of holes and break out the bricks to suit.
However I every fan I have fitted has a round vent on the back of the fan, granted you can get rectangular ducting. Are you planning on fixing the fan directly on the wall or elsewhere and using some ducting to get to the outside wall to vent? You will need something to bridge the cavity.
edit: I just saw the bit about ducting, too slow
If you just want to knock out a brick, then club hammer and bolster, no other tools.
I done this a while back in my garage wall, used a hammer drill and massive drill bit to make a circle, then knock it out with a bolster. It was hard work and the next time I would hire a core drill from a hire shop, make the job much easier.
Fan is on internal wall ducting will run to outside.
Thanks for the advice on the drilling pilot holes.
The plaster on the inside is crap so not worried if I lose a chunk drilling outside in.
I presume from looking at the ducting, which is slightly less than brick sized that it will allow me to bridge the cavity.
Just get on with it you fanjan 🙂 are there no men left in the world? where's the sense of adventure? all the answers first, from the internet. we are lost.....
Or pay a builder £70 to do it if its at all tricky to do / you CBA

Got two SDS drills in the house just now. A lovely plethora of tools loaned by friends and family for my eventual, perpetual kitchen install
I have one of those fancy saws reciprocating saws as well.
+1 hammer and bolster
Chuck Norris style. With your head 🙂
+1 for the bombers, own the brick!
Diamond Core Cutters, Jigsaws et al... WTF?
Take a standard 8mm masonry bit, your hammer drill and pop a series of close holes through the mortar around the brick. Knock brick out with hammer and chisel.
I thought this was going to be a thread about taking a dump 🙂
I was going to advise just "clench, grip and puuuuuuuush"
You need that Jean-Claude Van Damme chap, I am sure he could sort it out in seconds.
