I’m old enough to remember these which makes the above all the more impressive.
Ever Ready. 6V battery with two coil spring terminals. IIRC.
@Merak - yeah, I can remember torches like that red one, Eveready by the look of it, used to think a torch like that was the mutts! Among a whole bunch of torches I’ve acquired over the years I’ve got one of those little Olight AA lights, nice and simple, and handy for checking cars over in the dark if I’ve left my headtorch in my bag, that clip fits onto the bill of a baseball cap very neatly, for hands-free work.
Anyways, I assumed you meant those beautiful braids in the lovely bright rope
Oooo, snarky, aren’t we! 🙄
Those braided bits of paracord are handy for adding to piddly little zip-pulls on bags and some jackets, and I’ve got a couple attached to pocket knives and keys, it’s an extra bit of bulk that’s easier to feel and grip when getting something out of a pocket, more tactile than a smooth thin steel knife or whatever.
After the recent leatnerman thread I ended up picking up a wave +
I was stripping and building up my 'packer bike and found it much more use (and useable) than I was expecting. The pliers worked better than my dedicated ones and ditto for the wire snips. Self locking blade, etc., Does make it a touch illegal I guess so it sits in my BOB, sorry, work bag 😜
I ended up with one of them CS keyring jobs (somebody stuck a photo of one up earlier) free with it. So that's my EDC. Only used the scissors so far mind.
I also have a Fénix E01 led torch as I live in the wilds and need to be able to see to unlock my door of an evening so that does get used on pretty much a daily basis, atm anyways.
I have this for work. USB charging, replaceable 18650 battery, 600lm/150mtr beam for 10hrs, 250lm/100mtrs for 15 hrs - more than enough for a night shift

I must remember that excuse.

I think you need to explain why you’ve stuck a light round the end first
That'd explain why she said she could see me coming.
When sailing I use one of these

won't go through the boat/skin/drysuit if you drop it and excellent for cutting lines in an emergency. i would have thought that it would be the best choice for a kayak also.
I've also got a nice Leatherman and a Gerber that live on the boat but that's where they stay - why would I carry a knife around otherwise?
I've got a lot of time for a multitool type thing.
I have an old cheapo Swiss army knife which I've had for probably 30 years which is surprisingly "just enough" for lots of little jobs. By any objective standards it's screwdrivers, etc, are pretty poor. But compared with rummaging in the dark shed for the right tool it's often preferable!
The whole EDC thing I stumbled over a couple of years ago when looking for a keyring (yes, I know). All I can really say is that it's a miracle of the modern Internet that global communities of obsessives can form to share fetishised pictures of stuff like penknives or mountain bicycles. In days gone by only imagine how lonely these folks would have been.
As above, I have a Spyderco Bug on my keyring which I think is basically the bare minimum a knife could be. Just the job for opening parcels, which is about all I need.
That'd explain why you said there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
i would have thought that it would be the best choice for a kayak also
Unfortunately it isn’t black or marketed as “tactical” so it fails the saddo tackleberry test and will never catch on.

Some of the US sites are just scary. "Phone, keys, torch, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wallet... pair of Berettas and an extended magazine..."
https://everydaycarry.com/posts/15018/edc-dirty-leftist-liberal-style
That's your every day carry? I simply cannot comprehend how these people go through life, "just nipping to the shop, best take two guns..."
@Cougar that's simultaneously hilarious and terrifying.
That link in particular: *everything* about it says "I'm a borderline psychopath" then the Mutant Ninja Turtles wallet adds "But I'm a really fun guy!"
Apart from anything else, actually physically carrying all that clobber must get a bit of a pain. Surely two guns would be fairly weighty?
But he usually wears cargo pants, so that's not a problem.
I'm guessing he'll need a belt/braces thing like Tommy from Groundforce if he wants to take more, or just an EDC belt ( https://www.bluealphagear.com/product-category/edc-belts/)
*everything* about it says “I’m a borderline psychopath”
Thing is, this is considered normal over there. My American ex-girlfriend carries a gun in the car for "protection at work" - she's an accountant or insurance salesman or some such.
Surely two guns would be fairly weighty?
Ah, he's clearly thought about that, that's why one of them is a smaller version.
Two other scary things that might not be immediately obvious:
1) That wasn't any sort of targeted search on my part, it was simply a typical result when I googled "edc usa."
2) He lists his profile as "student." He's presumably walking around a school / college campus with all that shit.
I love the American EDC threads about church carry. Like, you have faith but not that much. Who carries a ****in pistol, extra clip and 3 knives to church?
@Merak
Went for the James Brand Ellis and Nitecore E4k in the end, just awaiting delivery.....
Nitecore ,that's just dropping in macho, you are just the watery U.k version of those U.S nuts
Black with silver blade, theres a special edition I was tempted by but it doesn't have the serrated section at the base of the blade so put me off.
Who carries a **** pistol, extra clip and 3 knives to church?
Have you not seen that documentary, Kill Bill?
Perhaps his church is the Wesboro Baptists?
why would I carry a knife around otherwise?
Why wouldn’t you? Plenty of everyday items that are almost impossible to open without one, mostly plastic packaging.
That’s why god invented house keys. If you don’t have scissors or a knife to hand, the standard Yale lock key will open most things. Not well mind, but it will open them.

But is it a tactical, edc , house key anodised black, with a lanyard or carabiner on it and a torch built into it?
After years of working where I cut open bags, seals, boxes, cable ties, and all manner of other stuff the most useful bit of kit is still heavier duty first aid scissors, followed by a multi tool for screwdrivers. Obviously not as sexy as a knife.

also you can’t run with scissors
Luckily, I haven't had to extricate myself from a burning vehicle, and it probably cuts paracord too;

As for keyring torches, I prefer one of those slim 40 lumens USB-rechargeable jobs. It's Sod's law, and experience (maglite mini aaa) which dictates that anything with moving parts won't stay together once its inside your pocket.

Cardboard and packing tape, maybe, but there’s plenty of packing that a key will not touch, I had some tonight, actually a Lansky knife sharpener with a variety of edge angles, and the vacuum sealed plastic was really thick, my CRKC Pilar struggled to cut it, it was so thick.
And I’d very much like to see someone cut a zip-tie with a house key; even scissors struggle with those.
Edc is what you make it..
If its keys, phone and wallet ..why not optimise what you use, a minimalist wallet for example..or a very high quality tactical wallet, keys ..why not use a key bar or organiser of somee sort of system like that..
My edc uses multitools as I'm riding everywhere so the pliers and cable cutters are handy plus I regularly use the can opener as a finger nail cleaner and the scissors for minor cutting jobs. I do cut paracord/thick cord even rubber so they make a huge difference.
Also consider how you carry medication etc things you NEED ..I recently purchased a lever gear bit vault that's will carry 4 days of meds plus a few other tiny things..and now swear by it and wont go out without it..its simple but effective..
But for opening boxes or prying jobs the gerber prybrid is a good idea as it's not considered a weapon but a tool..I still use a gerber shard for prying jobs ..its cheap strong and reliable .
Whatever it is you carry EVERYDAY that's your carry ..I consider everything..like the promise ring i wear all the time a silver chain etc ..that's what EDC is ..what YOU use everyday and making your system work..it came from the American idea of preparedness but we have a different set of needs in the uk/more restrictions to carrying firearms etc so its tools we likely carry..
Besides the person sitting next to me will understand it when I'm letting them use my tool as they dong have one..and everyone laughs when I'm emptying my pockets but that stops when they realise it works better then stuffing a key, phone and wallet in there pocket and needing scissors or a knife or simply a pen(yes really ..I know very few people who edc a pen ..and are constantly admiring my fisher space pen when they have to borrow it ..because they DONT have a pen on them..)
when I’m letting them use my tool as they dong
can't imagine why 😂😂and everyone laughs
I have a Buck Redpoint that lives on my work harness alongside my skyhook and Fifi hook. I filled the bottle opener tab off the Redpoint so it could fit on a carabiner.
I have a couple of Leatherman Waves that do the rounds. One in the van the other lives various places around the house. (Pretty much wherever I last used it).
I can never be arsed with the daft wee screwdrivers or what not. I'd rather use a proper tool if I can.
Good spot...I was busy eating a sandwich while typing so typos come with that annoyingly but that made my day..
Been using my Olight S2 Pro as a bike light. Quick double tap for turbo mode...
Not a knife carrier (banned at work and already lost two to contaminated bunds) but my go to tool is a Wera Kraftform Kompakt 20 and an 8" Bahco shifter (also illegal, shh!).
If anyone has a suggestion for a multitool that can combine all three I'm all ears. Also needs to be easily cleanable so as simple as possible.
Oh and the point of the paracord is that it's supposed to be another handy thing to have.
@squirrelking, with you regarding the paracord, really handy stuff. I’ve replaced all the tent cords with it, using some with a reflective weave to make it more visible in the dark, replaced bootlaces, small pieces knotted and used as zip pulls, lanyards for items that otherwise fall out of pockets...
As far as those tools are concerned, they’re so specialised that anything else would be a compromise, and not function as well, I think. The Bahco looks like a suitable tool for beating off zombies, people stockpiling bog rolls and anyone trying to make off with the Wera!
welshfarmer, have you considered the possibilities of bailing wire and snips? (or is that too bulky for edc)
PS. As soon as I saw this thread I knew the "Wahhhh stop liking things I don't like!" brigade would be here.
Joyless, self righteous, knee-jerk critical of other peoples interests and obsessions where they differ from their own?
They'll never know the joy of finding or inventing (or helping someone else find) a better tool or way of doing something, because of the certainty that they know everything already.
Did someone stand over you as a child and enforce the colours you were allowed to draw with and the things you were allowed to paint?
Poor child.

<welshfarmer, have you considered the possibilities of bailing wire and snips? (or is that too bulky for edc)>
I carry around 3 leatherman tools at work..
So no it's still edc..
Just bought meself a new backpack as I needed something bigger and ended up getting the "mil-spec" Camelbak HAWG with the Crux bladder as it was a good priced and about the size I needed for commuting. Yeah it's a bit lot tacti-cool but it's black and hopefully not to overtly mall-ninja. Got plenty of pockets for 27 knives, 3 back up torches and a few Israeli trauma kits. Well, you never know. 😉

See, I used to carry my Trek backpack everywhere, tons of room for everything and anything. Since the zip broke and I've not got round to fixing it I've realised I never needed any of it. It was just shite I was lugging about for no real reason other than "just in case". Thats the trap you need to avoid falling into.
mall-ninja
Oh dear god you've triggered an internet flashback...
(or should that be flashbang?)
Welshfarmers pic above is one of the many reasons why I use to carry a knife when I worked in the field.
Carrying a knife in case of Welsh farmers sounds imminently sensible to me. (-:
Love my Camelbak HAWG (Maximum Gear version) and have been using it for work solidly for almost 3 years as well as it doubling up for use at the weekend etc. and it still looks minty fresh.
Only got 26 knives in mine though...😉
Well turns out I ordered the coyote brown version as it made more sense to not have a black back when we get temps around 40c I had a cycling hawg a few years ago but the zips broke. Not sure if it's just the Mil spec but I think they have lifetime warranty. I do carry a fair bit of stuff anyway so it'll get used for sure.
Camelbak have a very good warranty
Here’s my HAWG...
Fairly plain looking and not overtly military looking.
Yup same just in coyote. Did you get the antidote bladder or crux? Mine should be here some time between Monday and weds pending post disruptions. $200 (hundy quids)
Just snoopin your insta and spotted the black country flag.... I'm from wolvo originally
Haha, small world, I used to live just off the Penn Road.
Mine came with the 3l antidote reservoir, I got it on eBay from a company in the States, I somehow managed to avoid the import duty etc so it came in at around £92 delivered.
Get f'd. I used to live ON the Penn road at springHill by the shops.
2 new Olight in the collection - copper i5t EOS and a copper S2R Baton 2. Both getting lovely patina (actually the i5t looks better).
Also spent an evening sharpening knives - can HIGHLY recommend the Lansky diamond system. Dare I say it, it's idiot proof.
Here’s my HAWG…
That slogan now not entirely zeitgeist 🙂
I got a little Gerber fold out knife a wee while back for a camping/packrafting trip and seemed to have lost the Opinel I had before.
However, I've started taking to carting it around with me along with phone, keys and bank card these days and found it surprisingly useful.
Did someone stand over you as a child and enforce the colours you were allowed to draw with and the things you were allowed to paint?
Only five colours of wax crayons, and a pair of plastic scissors with rounded ends!
Speaking of scissors, and running with them, someone mentioned medical scissors back a ways, and they’re excellent things to carry in a bag, and dead cheap, too. Only problem is the blunt ends make it difficult to cut things like zip ties, ‘cos you can’t get the tip or point into the loop to cut it, which is where my little Spyderco excels.

There are occasions when a slightly more substantial pair of scissors would be useful, something like these:

Leatherman Raptor paramedic shears, the blades are about 5mm thick with a serrated edge on one blade, a seatbelt cutter, oxygen bottle wrench and a ring cutter.
Tough enough so if you can’t get a person’s ring off, you could cut the finger off with the scissors! 😉
Drop recently had a special offer on a flashlight recently which I couldn’t resist, and it ticks all the tactical boxes! It’s black, it’s got a strike crown, it’s got instant-on press on the tailcap button, and a side button on the tailcap that gives instant strobe, plus it cycles through the modes once the main tailcap button is fully pressed, and the last mode selected is what it turns on to. It charges via a magnetic connector on the front side of the light with a USB cable, so no having to keep taking the battery out.
It uses a high-discharge 18650 Li-ion cell, and puts out 2550 lumens at full wack - you can feel heat from the light on your hand.
It can have the tailcap swapped for one with a remote switch for firearm mounting as well!

oxygen bottle wrench
"US standard" apparently?
Gotta say though, they look ace.
Just bought this torch, the RovyVon Aurora A4x ti. It’s tiny but can output 650 lumens. It’s very impressive.

I’m after a new pocketknife after mine has been snaffled by my smallest child. Something as simple and plain as possible, just a single blade, but decent quality. Up to about £25 maybe. Something like this would be ideal, except I’ve read that newer ones have steel that goes blunt too quickly - dunno if that’s true or not?

Just bought this torch, the RovyVon Aurora A4x ti.
That's very, very nice.
This has been on my keyring for a couple of years: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06WLMSVYF It throws out an astonishing amount of light for the size, and yours is like 5x mine.
@thegreatape Have a look at that Gerber I got - seems to meet your requirements. Was £25 I think and that was just walking into a shop and going "got any knives?" - not exactly shopping around.
I’ve just been looking for it! Straightlace is its name apparently. I assume it’s lasting well? How does it compare to a Victorinox knife, if you’re able to?
@thegreatape a Gerber Paraframe 1 might do the trick.
Gerber Para Frame 1 Fine Edge Pocket Knife - Silver https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000JJJ2UG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_FZFPEbW0BKWX6
Thanks, I like the look of that one too.
I'll just point out that the Paraframe has a locking blade, which makes it illegal in the UK. Maybe that doesn't bother you, it's just it put m off when I was considering it.
Ah yes. Probably something I should bear in mind!
TGA, as much as I like Victorinox (and have quite a few multitool knives of theres) there are slightly better blades out there for a similar price, especially if you want a single-blade knife.
Have a look at Böker? They use a Sandvik steel developed specifically for knives. I was itching to get a small simple knife for keyring, looked at SAK (Pioneer, silver Alox) but couldn’t decide so ... grabbed a boot sale special for time-being. I do still have an itch for a decent simple pocket knife. ie maybe
Böker Plus Tech-Tool 1 (Ebony):

I have no real frame of reference when it comes to knives, so can't really compare to any other.
Em, it is sharp. It feels well made. It is a little heavier than the Opinel I had which had a similar length of blade. It has a little clip to hold on your pockets or whatever, or you can put a lanyard through it (you don't get a lanyard in the box). I like the colours which is mostly why I bought it.
They had one called a Wingtip next to it in the shop but its blade seemed a little too short.
I really like the idea of EDC or at least when it is used in context of being prepared to most things happening during working day.
Being middle aged IT person it means that most weapon-like thing I carry are Victorinox nail clippers but work bag contains several different USB cables, headset, Jabra conference speaker, few pens and pencils, chargers and lots of ibuprofen.
YGH thanks. It does look good I agree.
As do the Boker ones. I can see myself ending up ordering several to have a proper look at them all.
Haha I’ve lost the plot with birthday money burning cutting a hole in my pocket. What’s the betting I’ll settle on yet another smaller SAK to replace the old trusty (now lost) Camper, because ‘if only I had an awl/scissors/etc (mix and match foresight of possible ‘emergencies’)...
TGA the Ruike S11 is very similar to Böker Plus 1, with (IIC) the same steel? Yet about half of the price.
Arthur Wright still do some attractive, traditional folders...
I’ll just point out that the Paraframe has a locking blade, which makes it illegal in the UK.
Oops, I didn't realise that. 🙁
In my defence it's main use is for opening Amazon parcels. It doesn't leave the house.
Oh bugger. Olight Aus have said there's 30% off tomorrow's Torch Tuesday
I don't needanother one, but the 2000lumen Perun with 30% is tempting...
Angel / Devil moment
Damn it, don't tempt me.
Re: Gerber knives. I've got a pocket square - top of pic (also got a Skeletool CX since I took this pic)
It's blunt as a banana out of the box - sharpened it a bit since, but not to the edge it really should be

As well as tiny torches I’ve bought a few pocket tools, primarily knife based. I particularly like the BigiDesign TPT Slider (on the left below)
