Just turned the kitchen light on, 4 bulbs on a fairly modern fitting. Loud bang, flash, light bulb now hanging out of screw in socket and lights buggered.
Any electricians out there who could re enlighten me?
Cheap Gu10's at a guess? Just been there. One earth shattering bang from some supermarket bulbs?
Is the fuse blown?
I'm not an electrician, but...
the lighting circuit for that floor will have popped a circuit breaker or fuse; quite common for more than 5A to go through the circuit when a bulb pops on switch on.
Happened to us about a month ago - Ikea 3x GU15 or whatever they are; one bulb popped, took out the lighting fuse (1930s house, haven't got round to getting the consumer unit upgraded yet).
If you've got a modern consumer unit, just find the breaker for the lighting circuit for that floor; take the old bulb out & replace it; reset the breaker
If like me you have an old fashioned fuse wire CU, find the fuse holder for the lighting circuit, pull it out & replace the 5A fuse wire. Push the ceramic holder back in.
Switch lights on.
Just like changing a light bulb & fuse.
Coulda, sorry for my ignorance but is that the trip switch? I will have a look
Ahh, yes, i possibly would have looked at this first had i not had a bottle of chenin blanc. Surprised a bulb could explode like this though. I'm sure it was from Homebase
Buy from reputable sources, the place is awash with cheap import/copy stuff. Everything from cable to lamps.
Homebase, surely not? Thanks John but flicking the trip seems to have done the trick. Now the lights are back on I can start to sweep the glass up
I've had an exploding GU10 from B&Q
Oooh - now somebody has mentioned homebase - thats rung a few bells = that's where our old gu10's came from. Cheap(not) unreliable explosive crap! Rant over.
If it's a low energy bulb then the contents that have just exploded everywhere are TOXIC.
Seriously toxic.
