They are cheap, are they ok for basic usage?

Why wouldn't they be? They've been making flash memory for donkey's years and are a well respected brand, and while they are cheap so are all SSDs at the moment, cheapest they've ever been.

Been using them for memory for 15 years I think. SSD in this PC is 4 or 5 years old - seems fine so far.

Great speed upgrade to any PC - if going into a laptop, make sure its big enough.

Samsung EVO is my SSD of choice but I have used Kingston drives in the past without issue.

Got 5 SSD's in the various computers, all major brands - Samsung, Kingston, Crucial, from 128mb to 1TB.  All been trouble free and fast

They're probably better now but the only brand I'd avoid due to past experience would be OCZ, which is now Toshiba, I remember in the early days of SSD you were actually consumer beta testing firmware.

I've had a number of Kingston SD cards crap out on me. Never used their SSDs though.

Samsung EVO does me well and their Magician software keeps things in check, can configure over provisioning and their rapid mode. Some SSDs come with nothing and only rely on the operating system TRIM support. Still, generic SSDs in other computer and they seem to do fine also.

Yet to have been running an SSD for long enough for it to be generating more errors which it has to relocate around.

Fab, thanks.  Going to cheekily repurpose an old work laptop for Mrs Grips.

Instance dismisal for theft of company property, a criminal record, career terminated. Is it really worth the risk?

Pretty much what I would have said.

SanDisk - memory card manufacturer.

ScanDisk - what you do when the drive is knackered.

I assumed he meant SanDisk rather than some cheap soundalike branded thing.

Bloody hell.  All these years and I always read it as ScanDisk.  FFS.

As above, it's a known brand with a long history in the memory game.

Samsung are generally the SSDs that all others are measured against but i wouldn't be adverse to running Kingston. Especially if it's a slightly cheaper way to breath new life into a laptop.. Any known brand SSD is going to be a serious improvement over a spin drive.
